When anti-Muslim protesters showed up outside the Deen Center during a family conference themed around gratitude to God, the Muslim hosts did something unexpected: they walked outside with food, water, and apples, offering hospitality to the very people shouting against them. Shaykh Uthman and the community responded to hostility with patience, education, and genuine kindness, turning a potential confrontation into an opportunity for dawah and understanding.
Feeding Those Who Came to Oppose
Instead of matching aggression with aggression, the Muslim community offered the protesters shawarma, water, and fruit. When one protester was taken aback, Shaykh Uthman seized the moment to share the basics of Islam: belief in one God, love for Jesus, Moses, Abraham, and Muhammad (peace be upon them all), the six articles of faith, and the five pillars. He even addressed their misconceptions about pork, pointing them to their own Bible in Leviticus 11:7-8 where it is clearly prohibited.
“In Islam, we believe in one God. We don’t worship idols. We don’t worship people. We love Jesus. We love Moses. We love Abraham. We love Muhammad. We believe they’re all prophets of God. We believe that one true God that Jesus worshiped is the same one true God we worship.”
From Opposition to Openness
Throughout the encounter, the Muslims repeatedly invited the protesters inside to see the event for themselves, ask questions, and share a meal. A Christian grandfather named William even visited with his family, warmly welcomed by the community. The contrast was striking: those who came with hostility were met with love, and those who came with curiosity found genuine brotherhood waiting for them.
“We are your neighbors and you have nothing to fear here. We welcome you to join us for free food, sit down, and ask us any question.”
