Story of a young English man from Britain. Raised in a non-religious secular family, Believing science had all the answers...

Why I Left Atheism

Growing up in a secular, non-religious family in Britain, Abdul was taught that science had all the answers and religion was worthless. By his teenage years, he had concluded there was no God, yet something kept nagging at him: a quiet doubt that would not go away. Lonely, pressured by peers, and on the brink of entering the nightclub and drug scene, he was just one step away from a very different life when a Muslim friend’s persistent invitation to learn about Islam changed everything.

A Friend’s Persistence Changed His Life

For five years, Abdul’s Muslim friend had shown small glimpses of his faith: going downstairs to pray, answering questions without shyness, and living with a hospitality and warmth that left a lasting impression. At sixteen, this friend made a deliberate effort, spending three weeks telling Abdul the same core truths over and over: there is one God, there is a life after death, there is Paradise and Hellfire, and Allah is the Most Merciful. One evening, while looking up at the moon, Abdul finally said to himself: if this is true, it would not harm me to investigate it for myself.

I looked up at the moon and said to myself: if what he is saying is true, if there really is a life after death, then it would not harm me just to investigate this for myself. And from that point onwards, my heart was just open to Islam.

Science and Islam: No Contradiction

  • As someone raised to believe science had all answers, Abdul was struck to discover that Islam and science do not contradict each other at all
  • The Quran contains descriptions of embryology, cloud formation, the structure of the earth, and other phenomena that support modern scientific discoveries
  • The hospitality and community spirit of Muslims was a powerful invitation that made Islam feel welcoming rather than restrictive
  • The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to frequently pray: “O Turner of the hearts, turn my heart to Your deen,” reminding us that maintaining faith requires constant effort

The one thing that really impressed me about my first Muslim friend and his family was their hospitality and the way they treated me as a guest. If we want to encourage people to learn about Islam, we have to show them the community spirit and the welcome that Islam creates.

Abdul’s story carries a vital message for every Muslim living in the West: do not hide your Islam. Show the best image of your faith through your character, your manners, and your willingness to share the truth without shyness. Many people in Britain and across the Western world are closer to accepting Islam than they realize; they simply need to see it lived authentically by real Muslims. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that a person follows the religion of their closest friend, so surround yourself with those who are learning and growing in their faith, and let your life be the invitation that opens someone else’s heart to the truth.
