Forced to Accept Islam

There are conversion stories that begin with curiosity, and there are stories that begin with confrontation — a man armed with the Bible, determined to debunk a religion he had never seriously studied. This is the remarkable journey of a former Roman Catholic turned Evangelical Christian who set out in his early twenties to preach the gospel to Muslims online, only to find that the more rigorously he investigated the arguments against Islam, the more his own theological foundations began to fracture. His path from the church pew to the shahada is not a story of coercion or confusion — it is a story of intellectual honesty, spiritual courage, and the relentless pursuit of divine truth.

A Lifelong Christian Who Set Out to Refute Islam

Raised in a small North American town with no Muslim presence, he was immersed in Christianity from birth — first as a Roman Catholic for twenty years, then as a deeply committed born-again Evangelical. He believed with full conviction in the Trinity, the Divinity of Jesus, the crucifixion and resurrection, original sin, and the absolute authority of the Bible. He preached the gospel to friends, attended church regularly, and fellowshipped with pastors and fellow believers. When he decided to extend his evangelism online and engage Muslims, he sought out Christian-Muslim debates to understand what he was up against — and it was here that everything began to shift. Watching scholar Ahmed Deedat systematically dismantle core Christian doctrines in debate after debate, he grew frustrated not with Islam itself, but with the inability of credentialed Christian theologians to counter arguments made by a self-taught Muslim using their own scripture against them. Rather than dismiss what he was hearing, he did precisely what his own faith demanded of him: he went away and studied.

  • Raised Roman Catholic, later born-again Evangelical — deeply committed to Christian doctrine for over two decades
  • Sought out Christian-Muslim debates specifically to prepare for online gospel preaching to Muslims
  • Watched debates by Ahmed Deedat, a South African Muslim scholar who methodically challenged the Trinity, original sin, and Biblical authenticity using scripture itself
  • Found that Christian theologians with PhDs in divinity could not refute arguments made by a self-educated Muslim
  • Chose to independently examine Christian doctrines from an Islamic perspective — an angle he had never before allowed himself to consider
  • Concluded that the Trinity, the Divinity of Jesus, and original sin were either unsupported by scripture, misinterpreted, or later additions by human scribes

“Nay — whoever submits his whole self to Allah and is a doer of good, he will get his reward with his Lord; on such shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.” — Quran 2:112

When the Evidence Could No Longer Be Ignored

His investigation brought him face to face with conclusions he had not wanted to reach. Examining the Trinity Doctrine, the Divinity of Jesus, original sin, and the textual history of the Bible through an Islamic lens, he found the arguments held up — that many foundational Christian doctrines were either absent from scripture, the product of misinterpretation, or the result of later editorial additions to the text. It was a devastating blow to a man who had devoted the better part of his life to his faith. Yet rather than retreat into comfortable certainty, he pressed further. He moved to a city, found a mosque, knocked on its door, and began weekly meetings with an imam who gave him literature, shared the biography of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, answered every question with patience — and then, in a gesture that struck him more powerfully than any theological argument, told him plainly: “I do not want you to become a Muslim unless you are sure about the faith.” No emotional pressure, no urgency, no manipulation. In his encounter with real Islam and real Muslims, nobody was forcing him. The faith was extending an invitation, not issuing an ultimatum.

“I saw in the Quran a message of peace, hope, and tranquility — salvation and kindness and goodness. And I recognized that these good teachings cannot come from Satan.” — Former Christian, upon accepting Islam

A Free Choice, a True Faith, a New Beginning

His eventual acceptance of Islam was not a surrender to pressure — it was a surrender to truth. He came to understand that Islam teaches tawhid, pure and uncompromised monotheism, and that Jesus (peace be upon him) is honoured as a prophet and the Messiah rather than reduced to a theological mechanism for blood atonement. He found that in Islam, salvation flows from Allah’s mercy and grace through sincere faith and righteous deeds — not through inherited guilt. The Islamic concept of original forgiveness moved him deeply: that Adam and Hawwa sinned, repented sincerely, and were forgiven, with their descendants carrying no inherited burden into the world. On the day he declared the shahada, he did not feel he had abandoned Jesus — he felt, for the first time, that he was following the true message of Jesus the way it was always intended: in complete submission to the One God. His story stands as a powerful reminder that the greatest obstacle to guidance is often the assumptions we carry before we begin. For anyone navigating questions of faith, purpose, and spirituality, the lesson is clear: approach the truth with an open heart, follow the evidence with intellectual honesty, and trust that Allah guides those who seek Him sincerely.
