The Quran, revealed over 1,400 years ago to a man who could neither read nor write, contains a detailed and scientifically accurate description of human embryonic development that modern science only confirmed in the twentieth century using advanced microscopy. This remarkable Quranic miracle in Surah Al-Mu’minun (Chapter 23, verses 12-14) provides some of the most compelling evidence that this book could only have come from the Creator of the heavens and the earth.
The Arabic Word “Alaqah” and Its Three Meanings
The Quran uses the Arabic word “alaqah” to describe the second stage of embryonic development. This single word carries three meanings: a blood clot, something that is suspended or clinging, and a leech. Modern embryology has confirmed that all three descriptions are astonishingly accurate. By the third week of development, the embryo has a functioning cardiovascular system with circulating blood. The embryo is suspended in the womb via the connecting stalk. And most remarkably, the microscopic appearance of the embryo at 22-25 days is virtually identical to that of a leech.
“The embryo’s connecting stalk has been described by scientists John Allen and Beverly Kramer as an object to suspend the developing embryo. The embryo is suspended, resembles a blood clot, and looks exactly like a leech under magnification.”
Impossible to Know Without Divine Revelation
The details described in the Quran are impossible to observe with the naked human eye. The embryo at this stage is no larger than a kernel of wheat, and the structural similarities between the embryo and a leech can only be seen under a microscope, technology that did not exist 1,400 years ago. As leading embryologists have acknowledged, these descriptions could not have been based on scientific knowledge available in the seventh century. The only reasonable conclusion is that these words were revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) by God.
“Descriptions of the human embryo in the Quran cannot be based on scientific knowledge in the 7th century. The only reasonable conclusion is that these descriptions were revealed to Muhammad from God.”
- The Quran describes embryonic development in precise chronological order: sperm drop, alaqah (clinging clot), mudghah (chewed lump), bones, then flesh covering the bones
- The word “alaqah” simultaneously means blood clot, something suspended, and leech, and all three definitions match the embryo’s characteristics at that developmental stage
- These microscopic details were revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who could neither read nor write, eliminating any possibility of human authorship
- The Quran challenges humanity to find a single contradiction within its pages, and after 1,400 years, no one has been able to meet this challenge
