Muhammad’s Marriage to His Adopted Son’s Divorcee, Zaynab Bint Jahsh P1/4

The marriage of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to Zaynab bint Jahsh is one of the most significant events in Islamic history — not for the reasons critics suggest, but because it was a divinely ordained act that abolished unjust pre-Islamic customs regarding adoption and marriage. This first part of a four-part series explores the background of Zayd ibn Harithah, the only companion mentioned by name in the Quran, and the events leading up to this historic marriage.

Who Was Zayd ibn Harithah?

Zayd was a young boy captured in war, sold into slavery, and eventually gifted to Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), who gave him to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). When Zayd’s father and uncle tracked him down to Makkah and offered to buy his freedom, the Prophet gave Zayd the choice: return to your family or stay with me. To his father’s astonishment, Zayd chose to remain with Muhammad (peace be upon him), saying: “What I have seen from this man — his generosity, his character, his kindness — I would not trade for anything, not even my own parents.”

“It is not for a believing man or woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should have any option in their decision. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has indeed strayed into clear error.” (Quran 33:36)

Breaking Social Barriers Through Marriage

  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) freed Zayd and adopted him as his own son — for eighteen years he was known as “Zayd ibn Muhammad”
  • When it came time for Zayd to marry, the Prophet chose his own cousin Zaynab bint Jahsh, one of the most noble women of Quraysh, to demonstrate that social class means nothing in Islam
  • Zaynab initially hesitated because Zayd had been a slave, but she submitted to the command of Allah and His Messenger
  • This marriage was the Prophet’s deliberate effort to dismantle the rigid class system of pre-Islamic Arabia, where a former slave could never marry into a noble family

“Zayd chose to stay with Muhammad (peace be upon him) over returning to his own biological family. To honor this loyalty, the Prophet freed him and declared: ‘Zayd is my son.’ From that day forward, he was treated as the Prophet’s own child in every way.”

The story of Zayd and Zaynab teaches us that Islam values character and faith above lineage and social status. The events that followed — their divorce and the Prophet’s subsequent marriage to Zaynab by Allah’s command — would abolish adoption as it was practiced in pre-Islamic Arabia and establish new rights for orphans and guardians that endure to this day.
