Misconceptions on Islam and Muslim

Every day, people encounter Islam and Muslims for the first time and have genuine questions. In this episode of The Deen Show, common misconceptions are addressed head-on — from the greeting of “Assalamu Alaikum” to questions about alcohol, the hijab, and polygamy. Whether you are new to learning about Islam or a Muslim looking to better explain your faith, these straightforward answers provide clarity rooted in the Quran and Sunnah.

Common Questions Answered

  • “Why do you say Assalamu Alaikum?” This greeting of peace was used by all the prophets. When Allah created Adam, the first words he was taught were the greeting of peace. Even Christian priests historically greeted each other with “Pax” (peace) in Latin
  • “Why don’t Muslims drink alcohol?” The simplest answer: because God said so. Beyond that, Allah acknowledges in the Quran that alcohol may have some benefit, but states that its harm far outweighs the good. The evidence is clear in every society — murders, accidents, and crimes committed under the influence of alcohol and drugs
  • “Why do Muslim women wear hijab?” God commands it in the Quran. Islam prescribes modesty for both men and women — men also have dress codes, including covering between the navel and the knee and avoiding tight clothing
  • “Why does Islam allow polygamy?” Islam permits (not mandates) a man to marry up to four wives with strict conditions of justice and consent. No woman is ever forced into a polygamous marriage. As society increasingly accepts alternative lifestyles, it seems inconsistent to object to a consensual arrangement that has been practiced throughout human history

“We don’t want people to accept Islam because we tell them to. We want people to critically think, challenge themselves, and ask: is this truly a religion from God or not?”

The Wisdom Behind Islamic Rulings

Some Islamic rulings have reasons that may not be immediately obvious — why five prayers and not three, why 2.5% charity and not 10%. Rather than getting lost in the details, the approach should be to first examine whether Islam is truly from God. Once that is established, trusting in His wisdom follows naturally. A true religion from God should provide guidance for all aspects of life, and that is exactly what Islam does through the Sharia — the divine code that addresses everything from worship to governance to daily conduct.

For Muslims, the best answer to legal questions is always the foundational one: God said so, and He knows best. For non-Muslims sincerely seeking truth, the invitation is to study Islam from its authentic sources, ask the Creator for guidance, and let the evidence speak for itself.
