Iblees, The Jinn Race, and Devils

Few topics in Islamic theology are as misunderstood — or as universally fascinating — as the world of the Jinn. While mainstream culture frames unexplained phenomena through the lens of ghosts, UFOs, and haunted houses, Islam provides a clear, rational, and deeply spiritual framework for understanding these realities. The Quran dedicates an entire chapter — Surah Al-Jinn — to this hidden creation, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ gave us detailed guidance about how to navigate a world we share with beings we cannot see. In a compelling two-part discussion on The Deen Show, Sheikh Dr. Waleed Basyouni, Vice President of Al-Maghrib Institute and Imam of Clear Lake Islamic Center, unpacks the Islamic understanding of Jinn, Iblis, and the unseen dimensions of creation — and why this knowledge strengthens, rather than unsettles, a believer’s faith.

Who Are the Jinn — and What Does Islam Actually Teach?

The Arabic word Jinn derives from a root meaning something hidden, invisible, and fast-moving. In Islamic belief, the Jinn are real, accountable beings created from smokeless fire — distinct from angels, who were created from light, and from humans, who were fashioned from clay. They were created before mankind, share this Earth with us, and will face judgment on the Day of Resurrection just as we will. Allah states clearly in the Quran: “And I did not create the Jinn and mankind except to worship Me.” (Surah Adh-Dhariyat, 51:56) — a divine purpose that encompasses both races equally. The Jinn have their own communities, their own righteous and their own wicked, their own nations and their own accountability before God. Their invisibility is by divine design, as Allah states in Surah Al-A’raf (7:27): the Shaytan and his kind see you from where you cannot see them — a sobering reminder that our inability to perceive them does not diminish their existence. What the Western world labels as paranormal — haunted houses, unexplained presences, objects moving, eerie sounds — may in many cases simply be Jinn going about their own existence in a dimension parallel to ours. The Prophet ﷺ informed us that some Jinn fly, some take the form of animals or humans, and some reside within homes. Imam Shafi’i, one of the greatest Muslim scholars, even remarked that anyone who claims to see Jinn constantly is a liar — because the default of creation is that we do not see them.

“The more you remember Allah, the more you have this Faith with Allah — you are protected. You are stronger than anything else in life.” — Sheikh Dr. Waleed Basyouni

  • Jinn are created from smokeless fire; humans from clay — a distinction Iblis himself cited in his act of arrogance before Allah
  • There is an entire chapter of the Quran — Surah Al-Jinn — devoted to this creation, affirming their reality as a matter of Islamic faith
  • Jinn are invisible to humans by divine decree, but can see us; rare exceptions where the boundary is crossed explain many “paranormal” experiences
  • Jinn are diverse: some are righteous Muslims, some are disbelievers, and some are followers of Iblis — just as humans vary in faith and conduct
  • UFOs, seances, crystal ball readings, and fortune-telling phenomena can be explained through the Jinn’s abilities to fly, change form, and whisper information
  • The souls of the deceased do not roam freely after death — voices or apparitions claiming to be deceased relatives at séances are almost certainly Jinn impersonating them
  • Jinn who “help” people — through fortune-telling, magic, or psychic ability — ultimately enslave those people; history shows no magician or sorcerer ever truly ruled or thrived through such assistance

Iblis, Shaytan, and the War Against the Human Soul

Iblis is not a fallen angel in Islamic theology — he is a Jinn who was elevated through his worship, then destroyed through his arrogance. When Allah commanded the angels and those present to prostrate before newly created Adam, Iblis refused. His reasoning was rooted in pride: “I am better than him — You created me from fire and created him from clay.” This one act of disobedience, driven by the very same ego that tempts human beings today, earned him eternal expulsion from paradise. But Iblis requested a reprieve until the Day of Judgment — and Allah granted it. From that moment, his singular mission became the deviation of every human soul from the straight path of guidance and submission to God. He appointed from among the Jinn a personal whisperer for every human being, a companion assigned to know that person intimately and push them toward what is evil. He works through false “miracles” — statues that appear to weep, idols that seem to speak, healings performed in the name of created beings — all designed to lead humanity into shirk, the association of partners with Allah, which is the one sin the Quran states Allah will not forgive if a person dies upon it. Sheikh Basyouni shared a firsthand account of witnessing an exorcism — a man freed from possession through Quranic recitation — who moments after being cured bore a visible lash mark across his back, inflicted in anger by the departing Jinn. When the Jinn was later questioned through the afflicted person, it admitted it could not harm the reciter because he had prayed his morning prayer and recited his daily supplications — a real-world testimony to the shield that sincere worship provides.

“Verily, the plotting of Shaytan is ever weak.” — Allah, Surah An-Nisa (4:76)

  • Iblis is from the Jinn race — not a fallen angel — and was cursed for refusing Allah’s command out of pride
  • Satan’s vow to Allah was explicit: he would deviate human beings through every path available to him until the Day of Judgment
  • He assigns a personal Jinn companion to each human being to whisper, inspire evil, and exploit weaknesses
  • Apparent “miracles” in non-Islamic spiritual contexts — statues speaking, healings in the name of created beings — are very possibly the work of Shaytan’s followers
  • Jinn actually fear humans more than humans fear them — this Earth belongs to us, and we are the dominant creation
  • The daily Adhkar (morning and evening supplications), consistent prayer, and regular Quran recitation form an impenetrable shield against Jinn harm
  • Obsessing over or fearing Jinn is itself a trap — a believer’s focus should be on Allah, not on the unseen enemy

Understanding the Jinn is not about fear — it is about clarity. Islam gives the believer a complete map of reality: the seen and the unseen, the purpose of creation, the nature of the enemy, and the means of protection. Every prayer performed, every morning supplication recited, every act of sincere worship is not merely a religious ritual — it is armour. As Sheikh Basyouni emphasized, the weaker your connection to Allah, the stronger Shaytan’s foothold becomes; the firmer your faith and submission, the more powerless he is. The story of Iblis — created before Adam, given knowledge and proximity to the divine, then destroyed by a single moment of arrogance — is itself a warning for every soul that refuses to humble itself before its Creator. For the believer, this knowledge of the Jinn world is a profound Iman booster: proof that the Quran speaks truth about the unseen, that our struggles with evil whispers are real and acknowledged by God, and that the path of protection is accessible to all — through remembrance of Allah, obedience to His commands, and sincere submission to the One who created both Jinn and mankind.
