Understanding the Quran is essential for every human being, not just Muslims, because it is the final message from the Creator of the heavens and the earth to all of mankind. Dr. Muhammad McAdoo, academic advisor for the American Open University, explains how the Quran addresses all of humanity and provides a clear framework for distinguishing the true God from false objects of worship.
A Book for All Humanity
The Quran is not addressed to one race, one nation, or one time period. Allah opens many verses with “Ya ayyuhan-nas” (Oh you people), speaking to all human beings. Other verses specifically address the believers, the disbelievers, or the Prophet (peace be upon him) individually. This universal addressing confirms that the Quran was sent as guidance for every person on earth, regardless of their background or current beliefs.
“If the Quran is the final message, it must address all human beings. Otherwise, if it addressed only some specific people, there would definitely be an effect on the others.” — Dr. Muhammad McAdoo, explaining why the Quran’s universal address proves its divine origin.
The Fitrah: Your Built-In Compass for Truth
Every human being is born with what Islam calls the Fitrah — a natural, pre-programmed inclination to worship Allah alone. This spiritual compass is built into your very nature by the Creator Himself. However, the society around you, your parents, schools, and media can reprogram this innate chip, leading you away from your original nature. When people begin to feel that something is missing despite having everything the world offers, it is the Fitrah calling them back to the truth.
“Allah created all people with this natural chip — they are pre-programmed to worship Him. But the society, the parents, the schools, and the media change this programming.” — Dr. McAdoo, explaining why the search for truth is built into every human soul.
How the Quran Defines the True God
- Allah is uniquely One — He has no partners, no equals, no sons, and no daughters
- He is independent of all creation, while all creation is dependent on Him
- He is not a father and was not fathered — He does not share any of the limitations of human beings
- While we may share certain words with God’s attributes (seeing, hearing), His capacities are infinitely beyond ours — He sees all creatures at the same time while we can barely see a few miles ahead
The Quran invites every person of understanding to take these criteria and apply them honestly to whatever they worship. If their object of worship meets these standards, Muslims will join them in that worship. But these criteria only apply to Allah — the One true Creator who is uniquely One, eternally independent, and incomparably beyond anything in His creation.
