A man who was addicted to sin came to the righteous scholar Ibrahim ibn Adham seeking advice. What followed was one of the most brilliant and powerful exchanges in Islamic history, a series of five pieces of advice that left the man with no excuse to ever sin again.
Five Pieces of Advice to Stop Sinning
Ibrahim’s approach was not to lecture or condemn. Instead, he used simple logic that made the man confront the absurdity of sinning against the One who provides everything:
- First: If you want to sin, then stop eating Allah’s food and drinking His water. The man protested that everything comes from Allah. Ibrahim replied: Does it make sense to sin against Him while eating His food?
- Second: If you must sin while eating His food, at least do not sin on His land. The man realized all land belongs to Allah.
- Third: If you insist on sinning on His land while eating His food, at least sin where He cannot see you. The man understood Allah sees everything.
- Fourth: If you still insist, then when the Angel of Death comes, tell him to wait while you repent. The man knew the angel would never wait.
- Fifth: When the angels are commanded to throw you into Hellfire, simply refuse to go. The man knew he would have no such power.
“The man said: Enough. Enough. He had gotten his advice. And it was said that from that day, the man went on without sinning against Allah.”
This advice strips away every excuse we use to justify our disobedience. We sin using bodies Allah created, on land Allah owns, eating food Allah provides, in full view of Allah who sees all. When we truly internalize these realities, the shame of sinning becomes unbearable and the path to repentance becomes clear.
