Why You Should Be a Muslim Part 5

What does it truly mean to live with purpose, peace, and a sense of belonging that transcends race, culture, and the relentless pressures of modern life? In Part 5 of this powerful ongoing series hosted by Bilal Abdul Kareem, the conversation reaches into the very foundations of Islam — the Five Pillars and Six Articles of Faith — while confronting head-on the most persistent misconceptions that keep sincere seekers at a distance from this remarkable way of life. Whether you are exploring Islam for the first time or deepening an existing understanding, this episode makes clear that the guidance Allah has placed within His deen is not a burden but a liberation: a complete, coherent, and profoundly humane blueprint for a life well-lived.

The Five Pillars and Six Articles — Islam’s Complete Framework for a Purposeful Life

Islam asks its followers to ground their lives in five foundational acts of worship — known as the Five Pillars — each one a rhythmic reminder of why we exist and who we serve:

  • Shahadah (Testimony of Faith) — Declaring that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad ﷺ is His slave and Messenger.
  • Salah (Prayer) — Five daily prayers that open a direct line of communication with the Creator and purify the heart from within.
  • Zakah (Charity) — Giving 2.5% of surplus wealth to the poor and needy, keeping communities spiritually connected and economically just.
  • Sawm (Fasting) — Fasting the entire month of Ramadan, a practice prescribed to every nation and every prophet throughout human history.
  • Hajj (Pilgrimage) — Making the sacred journey to Makkah at least once in a lifetime, joining millions from every corner of the earth in unified worship of the One God.

“We are all brothers and sisters — on the way to caring and looking after and being kind towards each other. There is a lot of respect, a lot of dignity given to people. A lot of creative powers are released because you are more relaxed, and less on what I call the rat race, on the treadmill.”

Alongside the Five Pillars, Islam’s Six Articles of Faith — belief in the Oneness of Allah, His Angels, His revealed Books, His Prophets, the Day of Judgment, and divine Qadar — answer the deepest questions human beings ask about existence, mortality, and what lies beyond death. These are not abstract theological positions; they are living convictions that shape how a Muslim sees every person they meet, every trial they endure, and every blessing they receive. As the guest in this episode reflects from his own experience as a Muslim, embracing this framework produces something the modern world rarely offers: genuine inner calm, creative clarity, and the profound relief of belonging to something far greater than the self. When you know your real destination, the rat race loses its grip entirely.

Clearing the Record — What Islam Actually Teaches About Women, Wealth, and Justice

Among the objections most commonly raised against Islam — and the ones Bilal Abdul Kareem addresses with characteristic directness — are questions about inheritance rules and the permission for a man to marry more than one wife. These issues, taken in isolation, can appear troubling to the uninitiated. But Islam does not operate in fragments; it operates as a unified system of guidance, and the full picture tells a very different story. The man in Islam carries a legally binding, non-negotiable obligation to financially provide for his wife and children — food, clothing, and shelter — regardless of how much wealth his wife may independently earn or possess. Equally important is the reality that polygamy in Islam comes with an absolute requirement of equal treatment, equal financial provision, and equal dignity for every wife, with no hierarchy whatsoever between them.

  • The man’s financial obligation is absolute — he must provide for his wife and family whether she works or not, and entirely independently of her income level.
  • A woman’s earnings belong entirely to her — she may spend, save, or invest them however she chooses, and her husband has no legal claim over a single penny of it.
  • Equal rights across all wives — if a man marries more than once, every wife holds exactly equal rights in terms of living standards, financial provision, and time.
  • The inheritance differential reflects broader responsibility — the male financial burden of provision justifies the difference; viewed as a whole, the system is designed to protect and honour women at every stage of life.
  • Polygamy addresses real demographic realities — with more women than men in the world, Islam offers a dignified, rights-based framework ensuring no woman is left without the opportunity for a protected family life.

“Every penny the woman makes is her money and the man has no right to it. It is obligatory upon the man to spend his money on the family — she can put it in a pocket, in a safe, under the mattress. She can do anything she wants with it.”

Islam’s guidance on gender, family, and justice is not inherited from a less enlightened age — it is a divine system that takes seriously the biological, social, and spiritual realities of human life, and that places extraordinary care around women’s financial security, dignity, and personal autonomy. For anyone genuinely seeking a faith built on divine wisdom rather than cultural convention, this episode offers far more than answers to objections — it extends a sincere invitation to look beyond the misconceptions, engage honestly with the evidence in full, and consider whether the guidance of Allah, embodied in the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, may be exactly the clarity, purpose, and spiritual home the searching soul has always needed.
