As the moon rises and the day comes to an end, this reflective nasheed asks the question every believer should ask themselves before sleep: what did I do today? It is a gentle but powerful self-examination that turns ordinary moments into opportunities for spiritual accounting.
Questions for the Soul
Each verse poses questions that cut through the distractions of daily life and force honest reflection on how we spent our time in the sight of Allah:
- Did I remember the words of Allah throughout my day?
- Did I take time to thank Him for all that I have?
- Was I kind to my mother? Did I smile at my brother?
- Did I teach something beneficial from what I know?
- Did the love of this world lead me astray?
“I have whispered to You as I prayed, but was my faith bright or gray? Oh, tell me, what did I do today?”
Bowing with Purpose
The nasheed culminates in the image of prostration, the most intimate position between a servant and their Lord. The question of whether we truly obeyed Allah in our sujood and throughout our day is one that only we and Allah can answer.
“I bow to You with my face in the dust. Did I turn to You and did I obey? Oh, tell me, what did I do today?”
Every night before sleep is an opportunity for muhasaba, the Islamic practice of self-accounting. If you can honestly answer “I did my best for Allah today,” then rest peacefully. If not, there is always tomorrow to do better, as long as Allah grants you another day.
