Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has been under attack since the very first day of his mission — and for 1,400 years, detractors have recycled the same false accusations in an attempt to undermine his character and his message. In the post-September 11 world, these attacks have intensified, making it all the more important for Muslims and non-Muslims alike to examine his life with honesty and discover the truth about the man who changed the course of human history.
Encounters with Non-Muslims in Mecca
During the first thirteen years of his prophetic mission in Mecca, Muhammad (peace be upon him) faced two kinds of non-Muslims: those who peacefully disagreed, and those who actively sought to harm him. With his uncle Abu Talib, who defended his right to preach despite never accepting Islam, the Prophet showed deep love and profound respect. When Abu Jahl publicly abused him with the vilest words, the Prophet simply walked away in silence — and it was precisely this nobility that moved his uncle Hamza to embrace Islam and confront Abu Jahl at the Kaaba.
“What did Muhammad do? He didn’t reciprocate with evil words. He just left.” — The testimony that moved Hamza to Islam, demonstrating that the Prophet’s character was his most powerful tool of invitation.
The Miracle of Mercy at Taif
Perhaps the most powerful demonstration of the Prophet’s character came when the people of Taif rejected him, mocked him, and sent their children to pelt him with stones until blood ran into his sandals. An angel offered to crush the town between two mountains, but the Prophet refused, saying he hoped that from their descendants would come people who would worship Allah alone. Then he uttered the same prayer attributed to Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him): “Oh Allah, forgive my people, for they know not what they are doing.”
“Oh Allah, forgive my people, for they know not what they are doing.” — The same prayer of mercy spoken by both Prophet Muhammad and Prophet Jesus (peace be upon them), proving they received their inspiration from the same divine source.
Evidence Against the Claims of His Detractors
- He sent persecuted Muslims to seek refuge with a Christian king, praising the king’s justice — not his theology — proving Islam values fairness in all people
- He never invaded Abyssinia even after gaining military power, disproving the claim that Islam mandates world conquest
- His treatment of non-Muslims in Medina was governed by a pluralistic constitution guaranteeing equal rights to all faiths
- His response to hostility was consistently marked by patience, restraint, and prayer — not vengeance or aggression
The life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is fully documented and available for anyone willing to study it honestly. When examined with sincerity, it reveals not an impostor or a warmonger, but the most merciful, just, and noble human being to walk the earth — a mercy sent by Allah to all of mankind.
