What do you truly desire in this life? A beautiful spouse, a mansion, wealth, fame, or a prestigious career? If these fleeting worldly ambitions are all you yearn for, then know that you have been deceived by the temporary nature of this world. The Quran teaches us that the life of this world is nothing but play, amusement, and mutual boasting — and those who desire Paradise must set their sights far higher than what this world can offer.
The True Nature of This Worldly Life
Allah describes this world as a plant that grows beautifully for a short time, then withers and crumbles into dust. The competition for wealth, children, and status is a distraction from the real purpose of our existence. The stories of the righteous companions and early Muslims teach us that true success lies not in what you accumulate, but in what you sacrifice for the sake of Allah. The companion Hanzalah died as a martyr on the morning after his wedding night, and the Angels themselves washed his body between the heavens and the earth.
“Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, adornment and boasting to one another, and competition in increase of wealth and children.” (Quran 57:20)
Sacrificing for the Sake of Allah
- The early Muslims gave everything they had — their wealth, their families, and even their lives — for the sake of Allah and His messenger
- A young mother during the time of the Prophet lost her father, brother, and husband in the Battle of Uhud, yet her first concern was for the safety of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
- Stories like these remind us that we must prioritize our connection with Allah above every worldly attachment
- Many of us today will not even donate the cost of a single cigarette to charity, yet we claim to desire Paradise
“So relate the stories, that perhaps they will reflect. Indeed, in their stories is a lesson for those of understanding.” (Quran 12:111)
If you do not even desire Paradise, how can you expect to enter it? We ask Allah to save us from the Hellfire, to not make the path to Jannah difficult for us, and to grant us the highest levels of Paradise. Let the stories of those who sacrificed everything for Allah’s pleasure be a mirror for our own lives — and let us begin today to invest in the only currency that will matter on the Day of Judgment: sincere faith and righteous deeds.
