When a Christian church in Balrico, Florida was on the verge of being demolished — with two competing offers ready to flatten the buildings and turn the land into a car wash or storage facility — something remarkable happened. A Muslim organization stepped forward with a vision to preserve the property as a house of worship, and the pastor chose faith over profit. This true story is a powerful reminder that Islam has a long, deeply rooted tradition of protecting churches, synagogues, and all sacred places of worship.
A Pastor Chose a Muslim Neighbor Over a Bigger Deal
The Deen Center project, led by Eddie from The Deen Show, sought to purchase a 35,000-square-foot church property on over four acres in the Tampa, Florida area. When the offer was submitted, two other buyers were already in competition — both planning to demolish every structure on the land. The pastor of the Baptist congregation had a choice: accept a faster closing from buyers who would destroy his church, or trust a Muslim organization that would honor the property as a place of worship. He chose coexistence over convenience, and faith over demolition.
The pastor really thought long and hard about it and decided that maintaining a place of worship was so important to them that they granted us the contract. They could have had their money in hand and walked away already, but because it was going to be a house of worship, that was so much more important than just getting the money and running.
Islam’s Historic Protection of Churches and Places of Worship
- The Covenant of Umar — When Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab entered Jerusalem in 637 CE, he guaranteed the safety of all Christian churches, crosses, and congregations, forbidding their destruction or seizure. This covenant remains one of history’s greatest examples of interfaith protection.
- Quranic Command — The Quran itself states that God defends places of worship where His name is remembered, including monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques (Quran 22:40).
- Prophet Muhammad’s Charter to Christians — The Ashtiname (covenant with the monks of St. Catherine’s Monastery) explicitly commanded Muslims to protect Christian churches and never demolish them, a directive that stands for all time.
- Living Proof Today — This Florida story is not an isolated incident. Across the world, Muslim communities continue this tradition of safeguarding their neighbors’ right to worship freely.
Breaking Misconceptions Through Real Relationships
People of faith, no matter what faith you are, are very respectful today — so much more so than five or ten years ago. If we all have the same end goal, which is to be kind to one another, to worship your God, and to live in peace, I think that is very much a reality today.
Coexistence Is Not Just a Slogan — It Is Islamic Practice
This story dismantles the fear-driven narrative that Islam threatens other religions. The truth, grounded in history and lived experience, is the opposite. From the Covenant of Umar to a Baptist pastor in Florida handing his church keys to a Muslim community, the protection of other faiths is woven into the fabric of Islamic civilization. When over 300 million Americans have little understanding of what Islam truly teaches, stories like these are not just heartwarming — they are essential. Faith, respect, and education remain the most powerful tools for building the interfaith bridges our communities desperately need.
