Two destructive forces have caused immense harm to the Muslim Ummah throughout history: Shirk (associating partners with Allah) and Bid’ah (innovation in matters of worship). This lecture dives deep into why protecting your faith from these two elements is essential, and why following the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) — without addition or subtraction — is the only path to accepted worship.
The Two Pillars of Correct Worship
The entire religion of Islam rests on two conditions for worship to be accepted by Allah. First, no one should be worshiped except Allah alone. Second, Allah should only be worshiped in the manner He legislated through His Messenger. If either of these conditions is violated, the worship is not accepted — no matter how sincere the intention behind it. The first ten and last ten verses of Surah Al-Kahf serve as a spiritual vaccination against the Dajjal’s deception, precisely because they reinforce these two foundations of faith.
“Your worship must fulfill two conditions: it must be directed to Allah alone, and it must be done in the way the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) demonstrated. Otherwise, it is not accepted worship.”
Why Bid’ah (Innovation) Is More Dangerous Than Sin
Sufyan Ath-Thawri, one of the great scholars of Islam, said that innovation is more beloved to the devil than sin. Why? Because a person who commits a sin knows it is wrong and may eventually repent. But a person who commits an innovation believes they are getting closer to Allah — while in reality, the innovation only increases their distance from Him. This is the deception of Bid’ah: it wears the cloak of piety while undermining the very foundation of the deen.
“The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: every innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire.” — This hadith leaves no room for the idea of ‘good innovation’ in matters of worship.
How to Protect Yourself from Shirk and Bid’ah
- Learn your deen from the Quran and authentic Sunnah — not from cultural traditions or unverified practices
- If the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do it as an act of worship, do not add it to the religion
- The religion of Islam was completed during the Prophet’s lifetime — adding to it implies it was incomplete, which contradicts the Quran
- Seek knowledge before practicing or teaching — a person without knowledge who gives dawah may cause more harm than good
The best worshiper of Allah who ever lived was Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and none of us will ever reach even a fraction of his level of worship. So instead of adding innovations, focus on properly following what he actually taught and practiced. That is the surest path to worship that is accepted by Allah and leads to success in this life and the Hereafter.
