Texas Cowboy does something amazing after reading the Quran

Brandon Estes, a Texas cowboy born in Corpus Christi — a city whose name literally translates to “Body of Christ” — was deeply active in the Methodist church doing missionary work and retreats before alcoholism nearly destroyed his life. After rehab and years in AA, he picked up the Quran and read until he could not stop crying. That moment set him on the path to Islam, where he found the one thing no rehab program could provide: a direct connection to God.

From Missionary Work to Alcoholism to Islam

Brandon’s parents instilled a deep love for God in him from childhood. His retreats and missions were always “God-based rather than Jesus-based,” a detail that would prove significant later. After a Catholic youth minister betrayed his trust, Brandon spiraled into alcoholism. In rehab and AA, when it came time to choose a higher power to call upon, Brandon insisted on calling upon God alone — not Jesus, not any saint, not any human being — just the Creator.

“In AA, when I had the choice to call upon any higher power, I said no — just call on God Almighty the Creator alone. Don’t do like the Muslims do, the pastor said, never humiliate yourself and put your face on the ground. But that’s exactly how Jesus prayed — he fell on his face and prayed to the Creator.”

The Quran That Made a Cowboy Cry

When Brandon finally got his hands on a copy of the Quran, he read and read until the tears would not stop. He did not know what to do, so he called an old friend — and discovered that his friend had also accepted Islam. Through this connection, he ended up at a mosque where he met Kamal El-Mekki, a well-known Islamic teacher, and his journey to Islam was complete. From a town with no Muslims whatsoever to becoming a Muslim cowboy giving the adhan in Texas.

“I had never met a single Muslim until this point in my life and I’m 20 years old. We don’t have any Muslims where I’m from. But when I read the Quran, I cried and cried profusely — I didn’t know what to do. Then I found out my old friend had also accepted Islam.”

Lessons from the Muslim Cowboy

  • Brandon’s sobriety and recovery came not from a 12-step program alone but from his decision to rely on God Almighty exclusively — the very essence of Islamic monotheism
  • The pastor who told him “never humiliate yourself by putting your face on the ground” was contradicting what Jesus himself did according to the Bible
  • Islam gave Brandon the strength that no rehab could — because true healing comes from connecting with your Creator directly
  • Over 300 million Americans know nothing about Islam, and stories like Brandon’s prove that when sincere hearts encounter the Quran, the truth speaks for itself
