There is a chilling narration from Islamic history that serves as a powerful wake-up call for anyone who thinks they can escape accountability for their deeds in this life. The story of the governor from Istanbul whose burial became impossible is one that should make every person reflect deeply on how they are living.
The Snake in Every Grave
When this governor died, the people dug a grave to bury him. But as they were about to lower the body, they found a bloody snake waiting inside. Terrified, they dug a second grave. The same snake appeared. A third grave was dug, and again the same snake was there, coiled and ready.
“On that day, they dug about thirty graves. Every time the grave was dug and they were on the verge of lowering the body inside, they would find the same bloody snake waiting.”
There Is No Escape from Allah
The lesson could not be more clear. In this life, a person might hide their sins, run from consequences, and deceive those around them. But once death arrives, there is nowhere left to hide:
- You have left the dunya and gone six feet under, yet you cannot get away
- The punishment does not wait for the Day of Judgment; it can begin in the grave itself
- After consulting the scholars, the people were told to simply bury him and leave the rest to Allah
“Even when you’ve gone six feet under, you can’t get away. You’ve left the dunya and you think you’ve gotten away with it. This is where it will begin.”
May Allah protect us all from the punishment of the grave. This story is not meant to cause despair but to awaken us to repentance before our time runs out. The door of tawbah is still open today, but none of us knows when it will close.
