Sister Lisa, a 31-year-old convert from Michigan, shares her deeply personal journey from a conservative Christian upbringing to embracing Islam, with the hijab serving as both the catalyst and the symbol of her spiritual transformation. Her story resonates with countless women who have found empowerment, dignity, and true feminism through the teachings of Islam.
A Christian Upbringing That Left Unanswered Questions
Raised between a Catholic father and a Baptist mother, Lisa gravitated toward Christianity on her own as a young girl, attending Christian camps and youth groups. At 15, she publicly declared Jesus as her lord and savior at a Young Life camp. But her mother, the most open-minded member of her family, planted seeds of critical thinking by asking difficult questions: how could all the children who never heard the Gospel be condemned to hell? These questions lingered in Lisa’s mind for years, quietly preparing her heart for the truth.
“My mother always put in my mind: how can all the children who haven’t heard of the Gospel, aren’t they going to hell? Is that what they teach you? I would be battling this argument within myself.”
How the Hijab Led Her to Islam
While studying photography in Florida, Lisa chose to create a documentary about the hijab. She interviewed her Muslim friend Naeen, asking the typical questions most non-Muslims have. Naeen’s response changed everything: she pointed Lisa to Corinthians 11:6 in the Bible, which instructs women to cover their heads. As Lisa dug deeper, she discovered that Islam was the truly feminist religion she had been searching for all along. On July 29, 2011, the Friday before Ramadan, she took her shahada and felt an overwhelming sense of peace wash over her.
“The thing about Islam, the reason why I love it so much, is it’s such a feminist religion. I grew up as the biggest feminist, always fighting for women’s rights, and what you end up learning is that Islam already gave women those rights.”
- Lisa lived in Morocco during college and even wore hijab for three months but still knew nothing about Islam at that time, showing that Allah guides people in His own perfect timing
- She initially struggled with wearing the hijab around her family and would remove it to please her mother, but eventually found the strength to wear it proudly
- As a new Muslim, she learned to pray by watching YouTube videos and made sincere mistakes during her first Ramadan, but Allah accepted her efforts
- Her family eventually accepted her conversion, proving that patience and good character can soften even the most resistant hearts
