Seerah of Prophet Muhammad 20

This episode of the Seerah series covers the miraculous Night Journey (Al-Isra wal-Mi’raj) in rich detail, exploring its theological significance and the profound lessons it holds for every Muslim. After the devastating Year of Sorrow — which saw the deaths of Khadijah and Abu Talib and the rejection at Ta’if — Allah blessed Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with the greatest personal miracle any prophet has ever received.

Understanding Al-Isra and Al-Mi’raj

The word “Isra” means to travel at night, referring specifically to the Prophet’s night journey from Makkah to Jerusalem. “Mi’raj” comes from the Arabic root meaning “to rise up” — it refers to the apparatus or mechanism by which the Prophet ascended through the heavens. These are two distinct journeys: the Isra was an earthly journey from Makkah to Al-Aqsa, while the Mi’raj was a heavenly ascension from Jerusalem through the seven heavens. Allah honored this event so greatly that He began Surah Al-Isra with “Subhan” — Glory be to the One who took His servant on this journey — indicating that Allah Himself is worthy of praise because of this miraculous event.

“Glory be to the One who took His servant by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque.” The use of the word ‘Abd’ (servant/worshipper) is the highest praise Allah gives to our Prophet — it means the one who has perfected the worship of Allah like no other.

Key Lessons from the Night Journey

  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) led all the previous prophets in prayer at Al-Aqsa mosque, confirming his role as the Imam of all messengers and the seal of prophethood
  • The journey was a physical one — body and soul together — as confirmed by scholarly consensus; if it had been merely a dream, the Quraysh would not have found it remarkable, and Abu Bakr’s faith would not have earned him the title “As-Siddiq”
  • The entire journey took only minutes in earthly time, as the Prophet’s bed was still warm when he returned — demonstrating that divine power operates beyond the constraints of time and space
  • Previous prophets may have been permitted certain things (like wine) that were later prohibited for this Ummah, yet the prophets themselves never indulged in them — showing their perfection of character

“After every hardship comes ease.” Allah chose to gift His Messenger with the greatest miracle precisely after the lowest point of his life — a powerful reminder that divine comfort follows every trial for those who remain patient.

The Isra and Mi’raj affirm the sacred status of both Makkah and Jerusalem in Islam, the continuity of all prophetic messages, and the supreme rank of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) among all of Allah’s creation. This event strengthened the believers and remains a source of spiritual inspiration for every Muslim who faces trials with patience and trust in Allah.
