Roman Catholic Convert to Deen

Some journeys to faith begin with a dramatic moment of revelation, but for Yahya — a former Roman Catholic who spent years moving between churches and searching through scripture — the path to Islam began in the quiet aisles of a public library. Without a single Muslim friend, unaware that an Islamic Center even existed in his city, and with no one to guide him, he picked up an English translation of the Qur’an and discovered, in its pages, exactly what his heart had already concluded. His story, shared at the Journey of Faith conference, is a powerful reminder that sincere spiritual seeking — driven by honesty rather than tradition or social pressure — has always been the first step toward true guidance.

From the Pews to the Prayer Mat: A Seeker Who Read His Way to Islam

Raised Roman Catholic, Yahya explored multiple Christian denominations in his search for answers, but one question continued to resist resolution: the doctrine of the Trinity. Reading the words of Jesus (peace be upon him) directly and carefully in the Bible, he could not find a clear statement that Jesus was God. Instead, he found verses like “the Father is greater than I” — language that pointed to Jesus as a prophet and messenger of God, not a divine being. When he eventually found the Qur’an, it felt less like a discovery and more like a confirmation. He called himself Muslim for an entire year before he ever met another Muslim — a remarkable fact that speaks to the Qur’an’s power to guide a sincere soul entirely on its own. Islam, for Yahya, was not a conversion away from his values but a confirmation of the very beliefs he had already reached through independent study and reflection.

  • Yahya explored many Christian denominations before finding Islam — his spiritual conflict was not with Jesus (peace be upon him) but with the Trinity doctrine.
  • He found the Qur’an independently at a public library, with no Muslim influence, social circle, or community guidance.
  • He identified as Muslim for approximately one year before meeting any other Muslim — a testament to the Qur’an’s direct spiritual power.
  • His pre-existing beliefs about Jesus as prophet and messenger aligned naturally and entirely with Islamic theology.
  • The Journey of Faith conference where he shared his story presents Islam clearly, openly, and without hostility — welcoming non-Muslims as guests with full hospitality.

“When I found Islam, this is what I was all about already — this is what I believed before: about Jesus, about life, about how God is, who God is.”

What Islam Actually Teaches: One God, the True Status of Jesus, and the Reality of Peace

A recurring misconception challenged in this conversation is the idea that Islam is an Arab religion, or that “Allah” refers to some foreign deity. Yahya addresses this directly: Islam means complete submission and obedience to the one God who created all of humanity — not to any man, culture, teacher, or political system. Allah is simply the Arabic word for God — the same God worshipped by Abraham, Moses, and Jesus (peace be upon them all) — the Creator, Sustainer, and Lord of every soul in existence. Far from diminishing Jesus (peace be upon him), Islam honours him deeply: as the Messiah, born of the Virgin Mary, a prophet of God, and one who will return before the Day of Judgment. On the question of terrorism — a false association that Yahya meets head-on — the Qur’an is explicit and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is unambiguous: innocent people, civilians, women, children, and the elderly are not to be harmed. Anyone making that association must go back to the source — the Qur’an and the authentic example of the Prophet ﷺ — and ask whether such violence reflects what is actually there.

  • Islam is universal — it belongs to no single race or ethnicity; “Allah” is the Arabic name for God used by Arab Christians and Muslims alike.
  • Islam means submission to God alone — complete obedience to the Creator, not to any culture, tradition, political movement, or human authority.
  • Jesus (peace be upon him) holds an honoured and beloved place in Islam: the Messiah, son of the Virgin Mary, prophet of God, who will return before the Last Day.
  • The Qur’an explicitly forbids killing innocent people; the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ specifically warned against harming civilians — terrorism has no authentic grounding in Islamic teaching.
  • Life, according to the Qur’an, is a test — and Islam answers the deepest human questions: why are we here, how should we live, and what comes after this life.

“Islam — to acquire that peace that everyone is yearning for — by submitting to the Owner of Peace, the one God. Submit to Him, not His creation.”

The Gradual Transformation That Sincere Faith Brings

What actually changes in a person’s life when they sincerely embrace Islam? Yahya gives an honest, grounded answer: the transformation is real, but it unfolds gradually — it may not arrive overnight, or even within weeks. Yet it comes. A person who submits to Allah sincerely begins to treat others with greater care and respect — their neighbours, their parents, animals, and the wider creation — because their sense of purpose is now rooted in accountability to the One who created everything. For those who feel drawn to the message of Islam but remain hesitant, Yahya’s advice is both simple and profound: seek the truth sincerely, with an open mind, away from the noise of media and cultural assumption. Read the Qur’an. Visit a local Islamic Center. Ask your questions — it is your right. Every human being carries the fitrah, the innate inclination toward the Creator that Allah placed in our souls before we arrived in this world. If you want peace, go to the Owner of Peace — submit to the one God, do the good He has ordained, and live a life of purpose, sincerity, and dignity.
