Islam and Terrorism – Contemporary Issues

In an era where the words “Muslim” and “terrorist” are used almost interchangeably by media outlets, it is essential to separate fact from fiction. Dr. Bilal Philips dismantles the myth that Islam was spread by the sword and provides the historical evidence that proves otherwise — revealing a religion that has grown through trade, good character, and the irresistible appeal of truth.

How Islam Actually Spread Throughout the World

The largest Muslim country in the world today is Indonesia, with over 200 million citizens — and not a single Muslim soldier ever set foot there. Islam spread to Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and much of Southeast Asia through Arab traders whose honesty and integrity in business dealings inspired the local populations to learn about their faith. The same pattern occurred across West Africa, where countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, and Niger embraced Islam through trade, not warfare. Even in countries that Muslim armies did conquer, the populations were never forced to convert — Muslim-ruled Spain maintained a large Christian population for over 700 years, and Hindu-majority India remained so despite a thousand years of Muslim governance.

“In the United States alone, between 300 and 500 people convert to Islam daily. Where are the swords? Who is being forced to accept Islam in America, the land of religious freedom? Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world — and it grows through truth, not compulsion.” — Dr. Bilal Philips

Islam’s Position on Terrorism

  • The Quran explicitly states: “There is no compulsion in religion” (2:256) — forcing anyone to become Muslim is fundamentally against Islamic law
  • Islam strictly forbids the killing of innocent civilians, women, children, the elderly, and religious leaders — even in times of war
  • True terrorism is the indiscriminate use of violence against non-combatants to create fear — Islam opposes this categorically
  • The false image of Islam as a violent religion originated during the Crusades as propaganda to motivate European armies against Muslims

“Islam is opposed to terrorism in all its forms. The indiscriminate killing of innocents — whether through bombings, mass shootings, or any other means — is absolutely forbidden in Islamic law.”

The truth about Islam and violence is the exact opposite of what the media portrays. Islam spread through the beauty of its message, the honesty of its adherents, and the undeniable logic of its teachings. We invite every sincere person to look past the headlines and discover the real Islam — a religion of peace, justice, and mercy for all of humanity.
