The most beautiful names belong only to Allah, and He has commanded us to call on Him through them and worship Him with them. This is the foundational principle of the entire series “In the Names of Allah” — that knowing who Allah truly is represents the single most important area of knowledge any human being can pursue. The greatest verse in the Quran, Ayat al-Kursi, is great precisely because it describes Allah’s names and attributes. Surah Al-Ikhlas is equivalent to one-third of the Quran because it focuses entirely on identifying who Allah is.
Why This Knowledge Is Supreme
When Allah created Adam, He taught him the names of all things — beginning, naturally, with the names of Allah Himself. This knowledge is what distinguished Adam and made him worthy of the angels’ prostration. As the scholar Ibn Abi Hatim stated: “The excellence of a field of knowledge is determined by its subject matter.” Since the Creator is the highest subject of consideration, knowledge of His names must be the highest and most noble branch of knowledge.
“The most beautiful names belong only to Allah, so call on Him with them.” — Quran 7:180
Two Levels of Worshiping Allah Through His Names
- Supplication of praise and worship — Glorifying and praising Allah using His names, as He commanded: “O Believers, remember Allah often and glorify His praises morning and evening” (Quran 33:41-42)
- Supplication of requesting and asking — Calling on Allah for our needs using the appropriate name; for example, asking forgiveness while invoking Al-Ghafoor (the Oft-Forgiving)
The 99 Names: Not a Limitation
“O Allah, I ask You by every name belonging to You which You named Yourself, or revealed in scripture, or taught one of Your creatures, or kept with Yourself exclusively in the hidden knowledge.” — Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said Allah has 99 names and promised Paradise to whoever guards them, but scholars confirm this does not limit Allah’s names to 99. Some scholars have identified over 1,000 names from the Quran and Sunnah. The number 99 represents a minimum that, when understood, believed in, and lived, transforms a person into a truly righteous believer deserving of Paradise by Allah’s grace. The journey through these names is itself a source of immense good — because applying the names of the All-Good in our lives can only produce goodness.
