His name was not Jesus — it was Yeshua or Isa — and he certainly did not look like the blond-haired, blue-eyed figure hanging in churches around the world.
The Real Appearance of Jesus
Jesus was born in the Middle East 2,000 years ago, a fact the Bible makes clear. He is described in biblical texts as having hair like wool and skin of bronze — consistent with the appearance of people from that region, resembling a modern Palestinian or Jordanian. The popular Western depiction of Jesus with blond hair and blue eyes comes from European Renaissance painters, not from any historical or scriptural source. As Gabriel puts it bluntly: “He wasn’t a white boy.”
“Jesus is described in the Bible as having woolly hair and skin like burnt brass. He was most likely what you would see of a Palestinian or Jordanian today. He was not a white boy — let’s just say it like that.”
How a Romanian Found Islam
Growing up in Romania where Islam was associated only with negative stereotypes tied to the country’s history with Turkey, Gabriel’s first real encounter with Muslims shattered everything he had been taught. The reality of meeting actual Muslims was completely different from the media portrayal, which sparked questions about theology, the nature of God, and the purpose of life that only Islam could answer.
