Clearing Up Misconceptions

In this special crossover episode, The Deen Show’s Eddie joins host Frank Avignon alongside Dr. Sabeel Ahmed of the ICNA Gain Peace project for a candid and far-reaching discussion about Islam’s most common misconceptions. From terrorism and 9/11 to the status of women and the hijab, the conversation tackles the tough questions that non-Muslims frequently ask, providing clear, evidence-based answers rooted in authentic Islamic teachings.

Islam and Terrorism: Separating Fact from Fiction

The very name “Islam” means peace through submission to God, and one of God’s own names is As-Salaam (The Peace). Dr. Sabeel makes a crucial distinction: Islam as an ideology is perfect, but it was given to imperfect human beings. Some individuals may act contrary to Islamic teachings due to ignorance, political motivations, or personal vendettas — but their actions do not represent the faith itself. The Quran is explicit: taking one innocent life is as grave as killing all of humanity, and saving one life is as meritorious as saving all of humanity (Quran 5:32).

“It is very important to differentiate what Islam is and what Islam is not. Islam is perfect; Muslims are not — just like in any other faith. The actions of individuals must be separated from the ideology itself.”

Common Misconceptions Addressed

  • Terrorism: Islam explicitly condemns the killing of innocents; the Quran equates saving one life with saving all of humanity
  • Women’s rights: Islam gave women the right to own property, conduct business, choose their spouse, and receive inheritance over 1,400 years ago
  • Hijab: Modesty in Islam applies to both men and women and encompasses speech, behavior, and dress — not just a head covering. If hijab is oppression, then Christian nuns and Mother Teresa were also oppressed
  • Jihad: The primary meaning of jihad is the inner struggle against one’s own desires; armed defense is only permitted under strict conditions when Muslims are oppressed or attacked

“If wearing hijab is oppression, then were the Catholic nuns oppressed? Was Mother Teresa oppressed? The mother of Jesus, peace be upon her, was also modest and also wore a head covering. Islam’s guidance on modesty is about preserving dignity — for both men and women.”

This episode is an excellent resource for anyone with honest questions about Islam. The open, respectful dialogue between Muslim and non-Muslim hosts demonstrates that understanding begins with sitting down together, asking the hard questions, and being willing to listen to the answers with an open heart and an open mind.
