Christians and Jews Under Islamic Sharia Law

Dr. Gerald Dirks, a former Christian minister who embraced Islam, returned to The Deen Show to discuss one of history’s most remarkable periods of religious coexistence: Muslim Andalusia (modern-day Spain and Portugal). For centuries under Islamic governance, Jews, Christians, and Muslims lived together in peace, contributing to unprecedented advances in science, knowledge, and civilization. This golden age stands as historical proof that Islamic law, when properly applied, produces justice and harmony for people of all faiths.

How Muslim Spain Came to Be

Before the Muslims arrived in 711 CE, the Iberian Peninsula was a cauldron of religious persecution. Jews were persecuted by Christians, Unitarian Christians were persecuted by Trinitarian Christians, and the population lived under oppression and religious strife. A joint delegation of Jews and Unitarian Christians traveled to North Africa to invite the Muslim rulers to intervene. The subsequent Muslim entry into Spain was not a hostile invasion but an allied effort by Jews, Christians, and Muslims fighting together against religious tyranny.

“A Jewish delegation and a Unitarian Christian delegation went to the Muslim rulers in North Africa and said: come into the Iberian Peninsula, we need you. This was not simply a Muslim invasion. It was an allied assault by Jews, Unitarian Christians, and Muslims.”

A Golden Age of Coexistence and Achievement

Under Islamic governance, Muslim Andalusia became the intellectual capital of the world. Jews, Christians, and Muslims worked side by side in science, medicine, philosophy, and the arts. Religious freedom was guaranteed to all, and the Jewish community in particular flourished under Muslim rule in ways they never had under Christian governance. The renowned literary scholar Harvey Cox identified Spain’s greatest literary work, Don Quixote, as a nostalgic wish to recapture what was lost when Muslim Andalusia fell.

“Harvey Cox sees Don Quixote as being a nostalgic wish to recapture what was lost with the fall of Muslim Andalusia. This is Spain’s greatest literary work, yearning for the return of what was lost.”

  • The media sensationalizes Islam because fear sells newspapers and drives TV ratings, following the principle “if it bleeds, it leads”
  • Jewish-Muslim relations were characterized by centuries of cooperation and mutual respect until the last 60-70 years of political conflict
  • Under Islamic Shariah law in Andalusia, Jews enjoyed religious freedom, economic opportunity, and cultural flourishing that they were denied under Christian rule
  • The fall of Muslim Andalusia led to the Spanish Inquisition, one of the darkest periods of religious persecution in European history
