Capacity of the Heart

Every Friday, the same words are spoken from pulpits around the world — the same Quran, the same reminders, the same call to worship Allah alone. Yet the companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would leave puddles of tears on the ground after hearing these very words, while many of us sit unmoved. The question this lecture poses is both simple and devastating: why do our hearts not have the same capacity as theirs?

The Story of Bilal and the Power of One Word

When Omar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked Bilal how he endured brutal torture — his master pouring hot coals on his bare back — with only one word on his lips (“Ahad — One, One, One”), Bilal’s response was stunning: “Had I known anything greater to say, I would have said it.” He had never heard a single ayah of Quran, never attended a lecture, never met the Prophet personally. He simply heard about Tawheed — the Oneness of God — and was ready to die for it.

“A 65-year-old woman cried after watching a young convert who could not even pronounce the shahada through her tears, and said: ‘I have been saying this my entire life and never once cried over it.’ The difference is the capacity of the heart.”

Restoring the Heart’s Capacity

  • The Quran is described as nothing but “dhikra” — a reminder — not something new, but something meant to awaken what is already inside you
  • The difference between the companions and us is not the words; it is the condition of the heart receiving them
  • Eliminate the spiritual poisons — materialism, heedlessness, and ulterior motives — that block the Quran from penetrating your heart
  • New Muslims are often moved to tears by the shahada because their hearts are uncluttered; born Muslims must work to reclaim that purity

“Had I known anything greater to say than ‘One,’ I would have said it. We recite the Quran all the time — but for Bilal, that single truth was enough to be ready to die for.”
