Can God Have a Son? (Part 2)

In this thought-provoking episode of The Deen Show, host Eddie sits down with Sheikh Yusuf Estes — a former Christian minister and preacher — to examine one of the most debated questions in religious history: Can God have a son? Drawing from Biblical scriptures, historical analysis, and the preserved text of the Quran, Sheikh Yusuf methodically demonstrates that the concept of God having a literal son has no firm basis even within the Bible itself.

What the Bible Actually Says About “Begotten Son”

Sheikh Yusuf begins by pointing out that Psalms 2:7 clearly identifies David — not Jesus — as the “begotten son” of God. Meanwhile, the famous verse John 3:16 speaks of an “only begotten son” but never mentions Jesus by name. Genesis 6:2 references “sons of God” in the plural, and the Book of Job describes “sons of God” going to and from the earth. If the term is applied so broadly throughout scripture, why is it exclusively attributed to Jesus in Christian theology?

“If David is the begotten son of God, and the Bible says ‘only begotten son’ without mentioning Jesus by name, then on what basis do we apply this exclusively to Jesus? The Bible has sons of God by the ton — Adam, David, and many others are called sons of God in scripture.”

The Islamic Perspective: Clear and Simple

  • God is not a man and is not the son of man (Numbers 23:19)
  • In the Quran, Chapter 112 states definitively: “He does not beget, nor is He begotten”
  • Jesus (peace be upon him) himself prayed to God and directed people to worship God alone
  • The term “Son of God” in Semitic languages historically meant a righteous or pious servant, not a literal offspring

“If you want to worship somebody based on their miraculous creation, then Adam is the one — he had no father and no mother, created from dirt. Eve came from Adam’s rib with no mother. Jesus had a mother but no father. The greatest miracle of creation points to Adam, yet we worship none of them — we worship the God who created them all.”

The episode concludes with a clear invitation: rather than following inherited beliefs without investigation, use your intellect to examine the evidence. The Quran offers a straightforward, rational understanding of God that resolves the confusion surrounding the Trinity and the nature of Jesus. God does not beget nor is He begotten — He simply commands “Be” and it is.
