Arrogance is one of the most destructive diseases of the heart, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned that not even a grain of it should exist in a believer’s heart. In a world where people are judged by their wealth, status, appearance, and achievements, Islam calls us back to the true standard: the condition of your heart before Allah.
What Arrogance Really Means
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) defined arrogance as rejecting the truth and looking down upon people. It is not merely about material wealth or social position — it is an attitude of superiority that can stem from knowledge, physical beauty, religious practice, cultural background, or even race. The devastating global consequences of arrogance are all around us: 24,000 people die of hunger every single day — not because the world lacks food, but because those who possess it are too arrogant to share it with those in need.
“Allah has revealed to me that you should be humble, so that no one is arrogant toward anyone else.” — Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). True humility is not when you are brought low by circumstances; it is when you are at your highest and still know who you are and where you stand before your Creator.
The Prophet’s Example of Humility
- The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) entered his home smiling, served his family, washed his own clothes, and mended his own sandals — despite being the most honored man in all of creation
- When he conquered Makkah and had his former persecutors at his mercy, he declared it “the day of mercy” and forgave them all
- Allah does not look at your physical appearance or your body — He looks at your hearts and your deeds
- The cure for arrogance is education, self-awareness, and remembering that everything we have is a gift from Allah that can be taken away at any moment
“Righteousness is good character, and sin is that which pricks in your heart and you do not want people to see it.” — Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
In a world polarized by race, wealth, gender, and geography, the Islamic message of humility is more needed than ever. We can be proud of our faith without being arrogant toward others. We can be confident without looking down on anyone. The balance that Islam teaches is to give everyone the rights they deserve, to fear only Allah, and to remember that the only measure of a person’s worth is the sincerity and humility of their heart.
