Are all religions man-made? Many people dismiss religion entirely based on the logical contradictions they find in one or two faiths, then apply that judgment to every religion without further investigation. In this thought-provoking episode of The Deen Show, a guest challenges this lazy intellectualism head-on, arguing that dismissing all religions because of disappointment with some is as unfair as judging an entire race or gender based on a few individuals. The real question is: are you willing to dig for the truth, or are you just looking for an excuse to avoid it?
Intellectual Laziness vs. Sincere Truth-Seeking
The guest uses a powerful analogy: if someone offered you five dollars to dig a ten-foot hole, you would refuse. But if they offered you twenty thousand dollars, you would start shoveling immediately. Similarly, if you truly believe that finding the purpose of your life is worth the effort, you will keep searching even when the first or second religion does not satisfy you. Giving up after one attempt is not a sign of wisdom — it is a sign that you do not value the truth enough to work for it.
“Just because religion one is man-made and religion two is man-made, that does not mean all others must be too. That is an oversimplification and intellectual laziness on your part. You are just justifying going back to your old distractions.”
Why the Search Cannot Wait
- The Quran describes the human tendency to want to continue in disobedience and put off accountability: “The human being wants to continue to disobey and explode in his disobedience”
- Close to 150,000 people die globally every day — there is no guarantee of tomorrow
- Death does not need to knock on your door; it comes without warning to the healthy and young alike
- As one of the Companions of the Prophet said: “People are sleeping, and when they die is when they wake up”
“Wherever you may be, death will come to you, even if you are in fortified towers. You may not even have three hours left on this earth. We have to have a sense of urgency to finding our purpose.”
The invitation is sincere and urgent: take the first step. Ask the One who created you to guide you. He is the Most Loving and Most Merciful, and it would be unfair for Him not to guide someone who sincerely asks. But it is equally unfair to yourself to never ask in the first place. Islam calls you to something that is already in your very nature — to surrender and submit to God alone, not to His creation. If you can accept this simple truth, everything else will fall into place. Do not sleep through this life only to wake up when it is too late.
