There is a question that sits at the heart of every human soul: Why am I here? The answer, according to the Islamic tradition and the luminous teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, is both profound and deeply personal — Allah subhana wa ta’ala created you to long for Him. Not merely to worship as a ritual routine, but to desire, to yearn, and ultimately to reach the one moment for which the entire journey of life is a preparation: standing before your Creator in the Meeting that gives every prayer, every sacrifice, and every small act of goodness its eternal weight. Islam, Iman, and Ihsan: The Three Ascending Degrees of Faith
Islamic scholarship, rooted in the renowned Hadith of Jibreel narrated in Sahih Muslim, outlines three interlocking degrees that together constitute the whole of the religion: Islam (submission), Iman (faith), and Ihsan (spiritual excellence). Islam in its foundational sense refers to outward submission — the declaration of the shahada, establishing the prayer, paying zakat, fasting Ramadan, and performing Hajj. Iman deepens this to the interior: sincere belief in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Last Day, and divine decree, both good and bad. The scholars of the salaf defined iman as something that “affirms in the heart, is expressed on the tongue, and is enacted through the limbs — it increases with obedience and decreases with sin.” But it is the third degree, Ihsan, that elevates both into their most refined form — a state of worship so conscious and sincere that the believer lives as though he can see Allah, and knows with absolute certainty that Allah sees him.

The Glass Bottle on the Road: Why Every Small Act Is a Letter to Allah
In the blessed city of Medina, a scholar once brought his car to a sudden, unexpected stop — no traffic signal, no pedestrian, nothing visible to the eye. He stepped out into the desert heat, moved a glass bottle from the middle of the road, returned calmly to his seat, and explained what had moved him to do so: the Prophet ﷺ taught us that the lowest branch of iman is removing something harmful from the pathway. “You never know,” the scholar said, “what that deed is that will allow you one extra second, one extra minute, one extra hour to look at the beautiful face of Allah subhana wa ta’ala.” That single act — quiet, unwitnessed by any crowd, unremarkable to a passing stranger — was not a performance of piety. It was a deliberate, conscious gesture of a man who had oriented his entire life toward the Meeting. The meeting where the believer will be able to say: O Allah, I struggled in this world for Your sake. I held on to this deen like hot coals. I sacrificed, I lived, and I died for Your sake. And Allah, Al-Shakur — the One who appreciates — will respond with the only reward worthy of such longing.
“Long to meet Him — and He will long to meet you.” Every act of faith, from the greatest pillar to the smallest gesture of mercy, is a reaching toward that moment — and Allah’s reaching back surpasses all human understanding.
The path of Islam is not a destination reached once and then left behind. It is a daily, hourly renewal of intention — a turning of the heart back toward Allah through disciplined prayer, through deepening faith, and through the excellence of Ihsan: worshipping with the awareness that Allah sees every hidden movement of your soul. Whether you are at the level of Islam, still building the structure of your outward practice, or striving toward Iman, deepening interior conviction, or reaching for Ihsan, where the heart becomes so illuminated that the unseen feels almost visible — every step is a step closer to that one moment for which you were created. Begin where you are. Remove the glass bottle on your road. Hold fast to this deen through every hardship. And know, with the certainty that Allah’s word carries, that every sincere act of faith — however small the world judges it to be — is already known, already weighed, already beloved by the One whose meeting is the greatest purpose of your existence.
