The Arabic word “Jihad” is one of the most misunderstood and misrepresented terms in the world today. The media has turned it into a synonym for terrorism and holy war, but the actual meaning is far more profound and relevant to everyday life. Jihad simply means “to struggle” or “to strive” — and every Muslim is called to engage in it, starting with the struggle against their own lower desires.
The Real Meaning of Jihad
Islam calls every believer to struggle — but this struggle begins within. You want to chase someone outside of marriage? That is a Jihad to resist. You want to utter a curse word? Jihad against that. You are tempted by drugs, alcohol, or gambling? Jihad to overcome those desires. The greatest Jihad in Islam is the internal battle against your own ego, desires, and temptations. This is what the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) called “the greater Jihad.”
“Islam is calling you to do a Jihad — to struggle to submit to your Creator. It is easy to submit to your lower desires, but it takes real effort and discipline to submit to what is actually good for you.” — The Deen Show on the true meaning of Jihad.
Jihad Is Not Terrorism
Brother Imran, a student of Islam and comparative religion, clarifies that the association of Jihad with terrorism is a tragic misrepresentation by a section of the media. In Islamic law, killing innocent people — women, children, elderly, civilians — is absolutely forbidden. Even Jesus (peace be upon him) greeted his disciples with “Peace be unto you” (Shalom Aleichem in Hebrew, Assalamu Alaikum in Arabic). Islam is fundamentally a religion of peace, and Jihad exists to establish and protect that peace — not to destroy it.
“If you read the Bible, you will find that when Jesus greeted his disciples, he said Shalom Aleichem — which is very close to the Islamic Arabic term Assalamu Alaikum, meaning ‘peace be unto you.'” — The common greeting of all prophets was peace.
Understanding the Different Types of Jihad
- Jihad of the self (Jihad an-Nafs) — the daily struggle against your own desires, laziness, and temptations — this is the greatest Jihad
- Jihad through knowledge — striving to learn, teach, and spread truth in a world filled with ignorance and misinformation
- Jihad through wealth — spending your resources in the way of Allah to support good causes and help those in need
- Jihad of defense — the last resort of physically defending your life, family, and community from oppression — with strict rules protecting civilians
Do not let media distortions rob you of understanding one of Islam’s most beautiful concepts. Jihad is the noble struggle to be a better person, to stand for justice, and to submit your will to the Creator of the heavens and earth. It starts with peace — peace with God, peace within yourself, and peace with the world around you.
