Dr. Bilal Philips gave an amazing Friday sermon at Fanar Masjid talking about how to live Islam. Don't miss it!

Living Islam Between the 2 Extremes

Islam is not a set of rituals reserved for special occasions but a complete way of life that governs every moment of a Muslim’s existence. In this powerful Friday sermon, the speaker challenges the widespread misconception, inherited from colonialism and Western secularism, that religion should be kept in one’s back pocket and only taken out for ceremonies. True Islam, he explains, is meant to be lived twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, guiding every decision, every interaction, and every moment of consciousness.

The Two Extremes Muslims Must Avoid

The concept of “moderation” in Islam does not mean practicing less religion. It means living within the boundaries that Allah has set, neither falling short by abandoning religious obligations nor going beyond those boundaries through violence and extremism. The speaker identifies two dangerous extremes: on one hand, Muslims who have been indoctrinated by secular culture to treat their faith as a private, occasional matter; and on the other, overzealous individuals who hijack the growing Islamic consciousness and channel it into violent movements that contradict the Quran and Sunnah.

As long as you are doing Islam, as long as you are living Islam, it can never be extreme. The extremism comes when we cross the bounds that Allah has set, either to one side or the other. But living your faith fully is not extreme; it is exactly what Allah prescribed for human beings.

Making Salah Real

  • The only prayer that benefits us is the living prayer, one performed with full awareness, understanding, and sincerity, not empty ritual movements
  • The reward of prayer comes from what you comprehend during it, not merely from the physical motions of bowing and prostrating
  • The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gave a simple yet profound principle: “Pray the farewell prayer,” meaning pray as if it is your last prayer in this life
  • If someone told you that you had only three minutes left to live, you would perform your wudu and prayer with extraordinary care and presence of heart

The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “Pray the farewell prayer. Pray the prayer of one giving farewell to this life.” If you only had three minutes left to live, how would you make that prayer? That is how every prayer should be made.

The awakening that is happening across the Muslim world must be guided by authentic knowledge of the Quran and the prophetic example, not by the revolutionary ideologies of political figures or violent movements. For the average Muslim, the most important jihad is the personal struggle to apply the laws of Allah in daily life: in how we earn our livelihood, raise our children, treat our neighbors, and above all, how we stand before our Creator in prayer. When Muslims embody their faith through righteous living, they become the greatest invitation to Islam the world has ever seen.
