How to Love: Relationships in Islam

Marriage completes half of a Muslim’s deen, but maintaining a healthy relationship takes knowledge, effort, and fighting fair within the boundaries set by Allah. In this episode of The Deen Show, an Islamic marriage counselor with 20 years of experience shares practical wisdom on how couples can build strong, lasting marriages according to the Quran and Sunnah.

Getting to Know Someone Before Marriage

Islam does not deprive anyone of the opportunity to get to know a potential spouse. There is such a thing as a “halal boyfriend and girlfriend” — an engaged couple getting acquainted under proper Islamic guidelines, with a mahram (chaperone) present. The key difference from Western dating is that the interaction is purposeful, supervised, and directed toward marriage — not casual or without commitment.

“Islam does not deny the fact that you should have a beautiful wife or get to know someone — but let’s do it properly. There’s no Rapunzel, no Romeo and Juliet. Let’s keep it real and keep it halal.”

Fighting Fair in Marriage

  • Look at the good: Focus on your spouse’s positive qualities rather than their faults — the good will always outweigh the bad
  • Don’t divorce over trivial matters: Imam Malik once slapped a man who wanted to divorce his wife because he “didn’t feel love anymore” — homes are built on more than just emotion
  • Seek qualified help: Turn to your imam, Islamic counselors, and family arbitrators before considering separation
  • Remember your mission: Marriage is a boat navigating the trials of this life together, aiming for the safety of Jannah

“We have a message, we have children, we have a goal. Our boat must get to safety — and safety is Jannah, insha’Allah.”

Building a family is hard work, and Shaytan actively tries to break Muslim homes because broken homes produce broken societies. The advice is clear: go towards the Quran and Sunnah, seek qualified counselors, and remember that it is always easier to tear something down than to build it. Fight for your marriage the way you would fight for anything precious — because it is.
