The Sacred Knowledge Part 4

This is the fourth and final session of “The Sacred Knowledge” series, exploring the elementary stages of seeking Islamic knowledge based on Imam Al-Ghazali’s guide to benefiting from sacred learning. The lecture covers essential categories of knowledge every Muslim must possess, from understanding halal and haram to knowing how to live with one’s spouse, and concludes with a powerful reminder about honoring Islamic scholars.

Knowledge Every Muslim Must Have

  • Acquaintance with Allah: Knowing who Allah is and what His attributes are, while recognizing the boundaries of what human minds can comprehend about the divine
  • The realities of worship: Understanding the deeper dimensions of wudu, salah, zakat, and other obligations — not just their outward forms but their spiritual purposes
  • Halal and haram: The Prophet (peace be upon him) particularly emphasized three areas: what we eat, what we drink, and what we wear. In these matters, “I think it’s halal” is not sufficient — one must actively seek knowledge from qualified scholars
  • Marriage and divorce: These are not knee-jerk reactions but knowledge-based decisions grounded in the Quran and Sunnah as understood by the great imams

“The woman was created from the rib — if you try to straighten it, it will break. This does not mean she is crooked. It means she was created with delicacy. If you keep hammering her, badgering her, abusing her, you are the one at fault.”

Honoring the Scholars of Islam

The lecture concludes with a sobering warning: speaking ill of Islamic scholars without evidence is one of the most dangerous things a Muslim can do. The scholars are the inheritors of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and the Prophet said that even the ants and the fish make dua for those who teach people good. Offhand comments criticizing scholars may seem trivial, but a single careless word can drag a person into the depths of Jahannam.

“No one is critical of the scholars without reason except that person has missing iman in their heart. Guard what you say about others — especially those who guard Islam.”

The path of sacred knowledge requires humility, sincerity, and respect for those who carry the torch of prophetic inheritance. May Allah unite us upon the truth, protect our scholars, and put the love of the Quran and Sunnah in our hearts and the hearts of our children.
