Liam Neeson, Famous Boxing Champ Oscar de la Hoya and Islam

Phil, a descendant of the Mayflower Pilgrims with Anglo-Saxon Irish roots, represents the quintessential “original American” who found Islam through an unexpected college elective. His story is joined by a discussion about famous boxing champion Oscar de la Hoya and other celebrities, exploring why wealth, fame, and material success consistently fail to deliver the peace and happiness that only submission to the Creator can provide.

A College Elective That Changed Everything

Phil grew up in Massachusetts, went to Colorado State University, and spent much of his college years questioning why he was there. Like many students, he was following a prescribed path: get a degree, get a job, buy a car, buy a house. The emptiness of this cycle wore on him until, during his junior year, he randomly selected a free elective from the course catalog: “Muhammad and the Origins of Islam.” His first homework assignment was to read Surah Al-Baqarah, the longest chapter in the Quran. That reading redirected his entire life.

“I opened up the course catalog and pointed down at a course, and the course was Muhammad and the Origins of Islam. I started reading the Quran at that point, and all of a sudden, what I believed about how the world really is was right in front of me.”

Why Celebrities Cannot Buy Peace

The episode discussed Oscar de la Hoya and other celebrities who, despite having hundreds of millions of dollars, continue searching for happiness in all the wrong places. Phil observed that when you become selfless and realize you are serving a higher power, your personal problems become minuscule. He pointed out that while people obsess over celebrity scandals, thousands of innocent people are suffering around the world, and serving a higher purpose is the only way to put life into proper perspective.

“When you’re more selfless and you realize you’re serving other people and you’re serving a higher power, very quickly your problems become very minuscule. Forget the celebrities, how about the thousands of people suffering around the world?”

  • The Quran literally answers the deepest questions about the purpose of life, and Phil encourages everyone to read it for themselves rather than relying on media portrayals
  • Phil’s Mayflower heritage shows that Islam attracts people from every background, including those with the deepest American roots
  • The media operates as a business where sensationalism drives coverage, so people must investigate Islam firsthand to discover the truth
  • Islam teaches that serving God and serving others brings genuine fulfillment that no amount of material wealth can replicate
