The Farewell Sermon

The Farewell Sermon of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stands as one of the most powerful addresses in human history. Delivered during his final pilgrimage, this sermon encapsulated timeless guidance for all of humanity — a message of justice, equality, and devotion to the Creator that remains as relevant today as it was over 1,400 years ago.

Core Teachings of the Final Sermon

In this remarkable address, the Prophet (peace be upon him) reminded the believers of the sacred principles that form the foundation of a just society. He emphasized the sanctity of life and property, declaring that the wealth of every Muslim is a trust that must be protected. He warned against usury and interest, instructing that all such dealings be abandoned, and he called upon husbands and wives to honor one another’s rights with kindness and mutual respect.

“All of mankind is from Adam and Eve — your skin color does not make you better or worse. Your piety and deeds are what make you superior, but only Allah knows this since they are all hidden in the interior.”

A Universal Message of Equality and Purpose

  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) declared that racism has no place in Islam, reminding us that the first recorded racist (Iblis) remains cursed to this day
  • He called the believers to sincere worship: establishing the five daily prayers, fasting in Ramadan, giving charity, and performing Hajj if financially able
  • He warned against the devil’s strategy of leading people astray through small sins, step by step, until they accumulate into something far greater
  • He affirmed that no new prophet or messenger would come after him, and that the Quran and his example (Sunnah) are the two sources of guidance that will never lead anyone astray

“Hold on to the Quran and to my example, which are perfect in every single way. Cling on to these two and you will never go astray. Being a Muslim is not just a Monday or Friday — weekends off — it is every single day.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) concluded by calling upon Allah to witness that he had conveyed the message, and he placed the responsibility upon every Muslim to pass this guidance forward to all people, across all lands, so that even the last person to hear it may truly understand its meaning and live by its truth.
