This episode of the Seerah series explores one of the most awe-inspiring events in the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — the Night Journey (Al-Isra) and the Ascension (Al-Mi’raj). After enduring tremendous personal loss during the Year of Sorrow, Allah blessed His Messenger with a miraculous experience that took him from Makkah to Jerusalem and then through the heavens, where he encountered the magnificent Lote Tree (Sidrat al-Muntaha) and received divine revelation.
The Lote Tree at the Boundary of the Heavens
During the Ascension, the Prophet (peace be upon him) was taken to Sidrat al-Muntaha — a magnificent tree located in the sixth heaven, beyond which no creation passes. This tree, known for its vast branches and beautiful fruit, was covered with indescribable colors and divine light. It marks the boundary between the created world and the realm of the unseen, where what rises from the earth ends and what descends from above begins. Near this tree, the Prophet also witnessed the Bayt al-Ma’mur (the Frequented House), where 70,000 angels enter daily to worship and never return again — a testament to the limitless armies of Allah.
“The heart did not lie about what it saw. Indeed, he saw from the signs of his Lord, the Almighty.”
Divine Decree and the Gift of Prayer
- The Prophet (peace be upon him) met Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) who encouraged the believers to plant the seeds of Paradise through remembrance of Allah: SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illallah, and Allahu Akbar
- He witnessed rivers of Paradise, including two hidden rivers and two visible ones that correspond to the great rivers of the earth — a reminder that all sustenance flows from Allah’s grace
- The five daily prayers were prescribed during this heavenly meeting, a gift that connects every believer directly to their Creator
- Allah’s decree is written, yet He erases what He wills and confirms what He wills — with Him is the Mother of the Book
“If you love God, then follow the Prophet, and God will love you.” This night journey stands as proof of Muhammad’s honored station — Sayyid walad Adam, the master of the children of Adam, and the greatest of all creation.
The Isra and Mi’raj remind us that after every hardship comes ease, and that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was given this extraordinary honor precisely when he needed it most. It is a lesson for every believer that closeness to Allah is the ultimate comfort and the greatest reward.
