Shaykh Yasir Qadhi gives a detailed analysis of the life of Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) from the original sources...

Seerah of Prophet Muhammad 16

This Seerah lecture dives into the intense persecution faced by the early Muslims in Makkah, with a special focus on the physical trials endured by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) himself. While the Prophet had tribal protection that shielded him from the worst abuse, several remarkable incidents reveal both the dangers he faced and the miraculous divine protection that surrounded him during the most critical moments of his mission.

When Allah Protected the Prophet from Abu Jahl

One of the most striking incidents occurred when Abu Jahl, the fiercest enemy of Islam, publicly swore that the next time he saw the Prophet praying at the Ka’bah, he would place his foot on the Prophet’s neck during prostration. When the Prophet came to pray, Abu Jahl approached — but suddenly turned back, pushing his hands out as if warding off something invisible. When his companions asked what happened, he said he saw a pit of fire and hovering wings between himself and the Prophet. The Prophet later explained that these were angels sent by Allah, and had Abu Jahl taken one more step, he would have been torn to shreds. This event prompted the revelation of the final verses of Surah Al-Alaq.

“Have you seen the one who tries to stop a servant when he prays? Does he not know that Allah is watching him? If he does not stop, We will surely drag him by the forelock — a lying, sinful forelock.” (Quran, 96:9-16)

Key Lessons from the Early Persecution

  • The slaves and lower-class Muslims — like Bilal, Ammar, and Sumayyah — bore the worst physical torture because they had no tribal protection, yet their steadfastness became legendary examples of faith under pressure
  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) was not entirely immune from harm; he faced multiple assassination attempts, culminating in the grand plot on the night of the Hijra
  • Allah’s protection of His Messenger was sometimes miraculous and visible (as with Abu Jahl), and sometimes it came through natural means — teaching believers that divine help takes many forms
  • The Quraysh’s opposition eventually escalated from mockery to physical harm to economic boycott and finally to assassination plots — a pattern that reveals how truth always threatens those in power

“Allah in His divine wisdom sometimes protected the Prophet miraculously, and sometimes He allowed harm to reach him for wisdom that only He knows. Both scenarios contain lessons for the believers — trust in Allah’s plan in every circumstance.”

The early persecution of the Muslims in Makkah stands as a powerful testament to the strength of faith. Despite having no political power, no army, and no material resources, the believers endured with patience and trust in Allah — and their perseverance ultimately led to the triumph of Islam across the Arabian Peninsula and beyond.
