Surah Al-Hajj contains some of the most powerful verses in the entire Quran, painting vivid pictures of both the reward awaiting the believers and the punishment prepared for those who reject the truth. These verses (14-24) call on humanity to reflect deeply on the signs of Allah all around them.
The Promise for the Believers
Allah promises that those who believe and do righteous deeds will be admitted to gardens beneath which rivers flow. This is the reward of Paradise, prepared for those who put their trust in Allah and lived according to His guidance.
“Indeed, Allah will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds to gardens beneath which rivers flow. Indeed, Allah does what He wills.”
All of Creation Prostrates to Allah
One of the most awe-inspiring verses describes how everything in existence bows before its Creator:
- Everyone in the heavens and on the earth prostrates to Allah
- The sun, moon, stars, mountains, trees, and animals all submit to Him
- Many among humanity also prostrate willingly, while others invite upon themselves the justified punishment
- On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will judge between all groups: believers, Jews, Christians, Sabians, and those who associate partners with Him
“Have you not seen that to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth, and the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and the mountains, and the trees, and the beasts, and many of the people?”
These verses remind us that submission to Allah is not something unique to Muslims. The entire universe is already in a state of submission. The question is whether we, as human beings given the choice, will join the rest of creation in prostrating to our Lord or turn away and face the consequences.
