Can God Have a Son? (Part 1)

In this detailed two-part episode of The Deen Show, host Eddie welcomes Sheikh Yusuf Estes — a former Christian minister — to examine whether the Bible truly supports the claim that Jesus is the literal Son of God. Through careful examination of Old and New Testament scriptures, Sheikh Yusuf demonstrates that the term “Son of God” was used broadly throughout the Bible and was never exclusively applied to Jesus in the original texts.

What the Scriptures Actually Reveal

The discussion begins with a critical point: the Bible was not revealed in English. Going back to the earliest available manuscripts reveals significant issues with modern translations. Psalms 2:7 clearly identifies David as the “begotten son” of God, while Genesis 6:2 speaks of “sons of God” in the plural. Even John 3:16, the most quoted verse in Christianity, says “only begotten son” without ever naming Jesus. Furthermore, John 14:20 states: “I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you” — applying the same relational language to the disciples.

“If David is the begotten Son of God in the Old Testament, and John 3:16 does not mention Jesus by name, then on what basis is this title applied exclusively to Jesus? The Bible has ‘sons of God’ by the ton.”

The Islamic Understanding of Jesus and God

  • Numbers 23:19 states clearly: “God is not a man… God is not the son of man” — a direct refutation of divine incarnation
  • The Quran, Chapter 112, declares: God does not beget, nor is He begotten
  • Jesus (peace be upon him) himself prayed to God, asked “Why do you call me good? None is good but God alone,” and said he came to fulfill the law, not to be worshipped
  • In Semitic languages, “son of God” (Ben Allah) historically meant a righteous or pious servant, not a literal offspring

“Adam had no father and no mother — he was created from dirt. Eve came from Adam with no mother. Jesus had a mother but no father. If miraculous creation makes someone God’s son, then Adam is first in line. Yet we worship none of them — we worship the God who created them all.”

The episode closes with a powerful invitation to think critically rather than simply filling in the blanks of inherited beliefs. The Quran offers a clear, rational understanding: God is One, He has no partners, no children, and no equals. Jesus was among the mightiest messengers of God, and Muslims honor him deeply — not as a deity, but as the blessed Messiah who will return before the end of times.
