When Geert Wilders produced his anti-Islam documentary, he employed deliberate manipulation of quotes, mistranslation, and removal of crucial context to make Islam and Muslims appear violent and threatening. A careful analysis of his methods reveals a campaign of disinformation that insults not only Muslims but the intelligence of his own Dutch audience.
Deliberate Mistranslation
Wilders took the words of a renowned Muslim scholar who was clearly speaking about the right of occupied people to resist their occupiers and stripped away the most important context. The scholar’s actual statement began with “the real jihad is that against the occupier,” but Wilders deliberately removed this line from both the Dutch and English subtitles.
“The Quran was telling Muslims to defend themselves and to fight the occupiers wherever they see them. But it was not saying cut off necks everywhere you go. What Wilders did to the words of this scholar is completely unfair.”
Insulting the Dutch People
In one of the most revealing segments, Wilders presented a Muslim living in the Netherlands who refused to practice adultery and homosexuality as an example of “failed integration.” The implications of this framing are deeply offensive:
- Wilders implied that refusing adultery and homosexuality means you cannot be Dutch
- This is an insult to every moral, upright Dutch citizen regardless of their religion
- His claim that Nazism was defeated in Europe in 1945 is contradicted by his own far-right political career
“Wilders himself is now a parliamentarian in a European country. Therefore, Nazism was not defeated in Europe.”
When anti-Islam propagandists have to resort to deliberate mistranslation and removal of context to make their case, it proves they cannot defeat Islam on the merits of honest debate. The truth always prevails.
