Matthew Bryan, who grew up with a Catholic mother and a Jewish father, was baptized Christian, served as an altar boy for 12 years of Catholic school, then followed Judaism — all while battling addictions to women, pornography, pills, marijuana, nicotine, and alcohol. After a three-hour debate about Judaism versus Islam at a Muslim friend’s convenience store, he walked away with his ego intact but an open mind. What he discovered next changed his life forever.
When the Trinity Stopped Making Sense
From his earliest years in Catholic school, Matthew could never reconcile the Trinity. How could one plus one plus one equal one and not three? This fundamental question drove him from Catholicism to Judaism, where he felt the monotheism was more reasonable. But Judaism still left questions unanswered. It was only when he began learning about Islam that every single question received a thorough, perfect answer that left no room for doubt.
“How could one plus one plus one equal one and not three? How could the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost all be one? That question is what made me start lacking faith in Christianity. When I learned about Islam, every question I had was always answered — perfectly.”
From Rock Bottom to Fajr Prayer Every Morning
Matthew went from a life consumed by addiction and sin to waking up every morning at 6:20 AM when his Muslim friends call him for Fajr prayer. The transformation is so complete that he now beautifully recites Al-Fatiha in Arabic — the opening chapter of the Quran that praises the Creator, affirms His mercy, and asks for guidance to the straight path. The same man who was deep in a hole with no light at the end of the tunnel found that light in Islam.
“Don’t be afraid to even read one surah. If you read one, you’re going to want to read two. You’re going to want to learn more about Islam. Don’t listen to what the media has to say about it — please. If it can change my life, and I was as deep down in a hole as I was, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.”
Key Lessons from Matthew’s Journey
- The debate between Judaism and Islam opened his mind just enough to start learning — and sincere learning inevitably leads to the truth of Islam
- Islam answered every question that Christianity and Judaism left unanswered, with a thoroughness and perfection that left no doubt
- Addiction, despair, and emptiness are all symptoms of a soul disconnected from its Creator — Islam provides the cure by reconnecting you directly to God
- Hold on to your deen the way you would hold on to money or gold — because unlike worldly possessions, your faith transfers to the next life where it truly counts
