Why You Should Be a Muslim Part 8

What does a man who possesses wealth, status, and every comfort the world can offer still find himself searching for? This question sits at the heart of this instalment of the Why You Should Be a Muslim series, hosted by Bilal Abdul Kareem — and the answer, drawn from genuine revert testimonies and clear theological explanation, points decisively toward Islam. Through personal stories of confusion transformed into clarity, a firm rebuttal of the most damaging misconceptions about the faith, and a reflection on the miraculous preservation of the Quran, this episode makes a compelling, heart-centred case that Islam is not merely a religion but a complete framework for life — one that addresses the deepest questions of purpose, spirituality, identity, and God.

When Everything Is Not Enough: The Stories of Those Who Found Islam

A wealthy man admits openly: he had wealth, he had everything — “a rich man,” by his own description — yet something remained missing. After reverting to Islam, the obsession over material possessions dissolved. He found baraka (divine blessing) in his marriage, peace in simplicity, and a happiness that no amount of money had ever produced. Then there is the story of a woman who spent years asking profound theological questions — who is God, is there more than one? — yet received no satisfying answers from her previous beliefs. When a Muslim sister answered every question she raised with clarity, and other Muslims gave her the exact same consistent responses, something shifted. Her most pressing question — how Jesus could simultaneously be God — found a rational, coherent answer within Islamic theology. And then, strikingly, a born Muslim watching a five-year convert reflects: she understands this deen better than I do. He returns to his faith renewed. These testimonies are not coincidences — they reveal a pattern: Islam answers the questions other traditions leave open, and it answers them the same way, everywhere in the world.

  • Wealth without spiritual direction creates an inner void — genuine contentment comes through faith, not possessions
  • Islam provides consistent, rational answers to the deepest theological questions, regardless of who you ask or where in the world you are
  • The Muslim ummah is a universal family — united across races, languages, and nationalities by one Creator and one direction of prayer
  • Converts often reignite the faith of born Muslims — their sincerity and clarity serve as a mirror for the entire community
  • The Shahada wipes the slate entirely clean — all previous sins are forgiven upon sincere declaration of faith in Allah and His Messenger ﷺ

“Before Islam my life didn’t have much direction — confused, going in different places, not knowing who the real God was. Since becoming a Muslim, I found that I’m part of a big family with different races, different nationalities, different languages. I’m more at peace inside. I have direction, I have clarity — and I have a big family.”

Addressing Misconceptions: Islam, the Sanctity of Life, and the Preservation of the Quran

One of the most urgent corrections this episode makes concerns the widely-held misconception that Islam tolerates violence against innocent people. The Quran is unambiguous: he who kills one person unjustly, it is as if he has killed all of mankind. This is not a minor ruling — it ranks among the gravest sins in Islam, exceeded in severity only by shirk (ascribing partners to Allah). The episode is careful to note that the conduct of individual Muslims — just as the conduct of individual Christians or Jews — does not define the religion itself. What Islam as a deen categorically forbids is the targeting of innocents under any circumstance, including in times of war. Alongside this, the Quran occupies a unique position in all of world scripture: Muslim, Christian, and Jewish scholars alike agree that it is the only major revealed text to have remained entirely unchanged throughout the centuries — a fact that fulfils a divine promise recorded within its own pages: “Verily We have sent down this Remembrance, and verily We will protect it.” No human institution could make such a guarantee across fourteen centuries and keep it. Key principles from this section include:

  • Islam explicitly forbids killing innocents — the Quran equates the unjust murder of one person with the murder of all humanity
  • Judge Islam by its scripture and the example of the Prophet ﷺ, not by the failures of individuals within the community
  • The Quran is uniquely preserved — the only major religious scripture that scholars across traditions agree has not been altered or corrupted
  • The Kaaba is not worshipped — it is a focal point that orients over 1.8 billion Muslims in one direction, expressing global unity before the One God
  • The Five Pillars and Six Articles of Faith form the complete, balanced structure of Islamic belief and practice — from the Shahada and Salah to belief in the Day of Judgement and divine Qadar

“He who slaughters or kills a person unjustly — without a right — it is as if he killed all of mankind. To kill someone without a right is a reprehensible sin in Islam.” — Bilal Abdul Kareem, citing the Quran

Islam, as this episode powerfully demonstrates, is a faith built not on compulsion or confusion but on clear evidence, universal brotherhood, and divine guidance that has stood unchanged for over fourteen centuries. Whether you are a sincere seeker still wrestling with the foundational questions — Who is God? What is my purpose? Why am I here? — or a born Muslim who has drifted and longs to find the path again, the message is the same: the answers exist, they are consistent, and they are waiting for you. The journey begins with a single declaration — the Shahada — and opens onto a lifetime of spiritual clarity, moral purpose, and belonging to the most diverse family on earth. May Allah guide every sincere heart to the truth, grant us firmness upon the deen, and make us among those who hear His guidance and follow the best of it. Ameen.
