Imam Qasim’s journey to Islam did not follow a straight line. Before discovering the truth of orthodox Islam, he passed through the Nation of Islam — a movement that cleaned up his outward appearance but taught doctrines fundamentally at odds with true Islamic monotheism. This second part of his story reveals how he moved from the Nation of Islam to authentic Islam, and offers powerful advice for anyone standing at the crossroads of faith.
The Nation of Islam: Clean on the Outside, Wrong on the Inside
After years of drugs, alcohol, gangs, and destructive behavior as a Christian, Qasim was drawn to the Nation of Islam when he saw how it transformed his father and brother. They were cleaner, more disciplined, and carried themselves with dignity. But the core teaching — that the black man was God and the white man was the devil — was something he could not fully accept, even as the movement’s discipline and critique of Christianity resonated with him.
“My brother came to me dressed in a white shirt and bow tie, completely transformed. But he was saying something I had a problem with — that the black man is God and the white man is the devil. I said, look, Jesus is white — and I showed him a picture on my wall.”
From the Nation to True Islam
- The Nation’s critique of Christianity answered questions he had struggled with, but its racial theology was not from God
- Elijah Muhammad himself eventually told his son to teach people that the real messenger of Allah is Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) of 1,400 years ago
- True Islam has no racial supremacy — it teaches that no Arab is better than a non-Arab, and no race is superior to another
- The transition from the Nation to orthodox Islam required accepting the universal message while keeping the discipline and moral standards
What If I Cannot Live Up to Islam?
“What if I fall back into sin? What if I can’t do all the praying and fasting? The answer is: you’re already Muslim by nature. Muslim means one who has a nature to submit to the will of God. Just make a conscious decision to align your actions with the nature you were created upon.”
For anyone in the Nation of Islam, in Christianity, or in any state of doubt, the path forward is simple: find someone who has already accepted Islam, bear witness that there is no God but Allah and that Muhammad is His messenger, and then spend the rest of your life working to align your behavior with that truth. You do not need to be perfect — you just need to be sincere. Islam is not a religion for one race or one nation. It is the universal way of life ordained by the Creator for all of humanity, and the door is always open for those who are ready to walk through it.
