Of all the questions surrounding the end of times in Islamic eschatology, few carry the weight and urgency of this one: where is the Dajjal right now? Muslims across the world have encountered various folk narratives — that he lurks beneath the ocean, imprisoned in a mountain, or wandering unseen among humanity. The truth, as illuminated by authentic prophetic hadith, is both more sobering and more spiritually clarifying: his precise current location is knowledge known only to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. What we do know — in vivid, unmistakable detail — is who he is, what signs will mark him, where he will emerge, and how every believer in this ummah can prepare.
Recognising the False Messiah: Signs Preserved Across Generations
“No Prophet was sent but he warned his people about the one-eyed liar. He is one-eyed, but your Lord is not one-eyed, and between his eyes will be written ‘kaafir.'” — Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, no. 6598)
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ spoke about the Dajjal with a frequency and precision that was itself a mercy — he wanted no Muslim to be left unaware. The term Dajjal comes from the Arabic root meaning to cover or deceive, one who speaks in vagaries and deliberately confuses. The word maseeh (messiah) is applied to him because one of his eyes is mamsooh — defective or abraded. Scholars such as al-Qaadi ‘Iyaad reconcile the various ahadith by noting that both eyes will be defective: his right eye blind and dull like a floating grape, his left covered by a thick fold of skin. His physical signs, described in multiple sahih narrations, include:
- A young man with a ruddy complexion, short stature, and thick, curly hair
- A wide forehead and broad upper chest, with a hunchback in some narrations
- The Arabic letters K-F-R (كافر) visibly written between his eyes — readable by every believer, literate or not, by the permission of Allah
- Completely sterile — no children will be born to him
- He will carry what appear to be a paradise and a hellfire — but his paradise is in reality hell, and his hell is in reality cool and pleasant
- He will command rain to fall and the earth to produce vegetation, and the treasures of the earth will follow him like a swarm of bees
- He will travel the earth in forty days — one day like a year, one like a month, one like a week, and the rest like normal days
Where Is He Now? The Island, the Chains, and What We Are Permitted to Know
The transcript of this episode gets to the heart of what many Muslims genuinely wonder: is the Dajjal under the sea? Imprisoned in the mountains? The answer from Islamic scholarship is unambiguous — there is no authentic evidence for him being under the sea, and that claim should be set aside. What we do have is a remarkable, authenticated narration involving Tamim al-Dari (may Allah be pleased with him), a companion of the Prophet ﷺ, who was shipwrecked with other travellers on an island. There, they encountered an enormous man, fettered in the heaviest of chains. This being claimed to be the Dajjal, and when Tamim al-Dari reported the incident to the Prophet ﷺ, he confirmed it. Where exactly that island is — Allah alone knows. How he has remained alive from that time until his appointed emergence is not knowledge that was given to the Prophet ﷺ to pass on to this ummah, and so we do not speculate. What the authentic narrations tell us clearly is that when he is finally released and begins actively rallying followers to himself, he will emerge from the east — from Khurasan — and specifically from among the Jews of Isfahan, accompanied by seventy thousand followers wearing crowns. He will then journey across the entire earth, entering every city and town, with two sacred exceptions: Makkah and Madinah, which will be guarded by angels at every gate.

- A chained figure encountered by Tamim al-Dari was confirmed by the Prophet ﷺ as the Dajjal
- He will emerge from the east, from Khurasan and the region of Isfahan

- His campaign on earth will last forty days total before his destruction
- He will be killed by ‘Eesa ibn Maryam (Jesus, peace be upon him) at the gate of Ludd in Palestine
Spiritual Armour: What Every Believer Must Do Right Now
The Prophet ﷺ did not leave his ummah without protection. Every Prophet warned their nation about the one-eyed deceiver, but Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — as the Seal of the Prophets and the mercy to all worlds — warned his community more than any before him. The tools of protection he gave us are not complicated; they are rooted in the daily practice of faith itself:
- Memorise the first ten (or last ten) verses of Surah Al-Kahf — whoever does so will be shielded from the Dajjal’s fitnah by Allah’s permission
- Recite Surah Al-Kahf every Friday — it will be a light for the believer from one Friday to the next (al-Mustadrak, classed sahih by al-Albaani)
- Seek refuge from the Dajjal’s fitnah in every prayer, as the Prophet ﷺ himself did: “Allaahumma inni a’oodhu bika min fitnat il-maseeh il-dajjaal”
- Strengthen your knowledge of Allah’s attributes — knowing that Allah is not one-eyed, does not eat or drink, and cannot be physically seen in this life is itself a protection against confusion
- Keep far away from him if he emerges in your time — do not approach out of curiosity; even strong believers have been warned they may be swayed by his miracles
“Whoever hears of the Dajjal, let him keep far away from him, for a man will come to him and think that he is telling the truth because of the wonders that are sent with him.” — Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawood, and al-Haakim)
The question of where the Dajjal is should ultimately redirect every sincere Muslim inward. We are living in a time of extraordinary fitnah — confusion, deception, and a blurring of truth and falsehood that mirrors, in miniature, what the Dajjal will one day bring in full force. The wisdom of Islamic guidance is that it never leaves us obsessing over what we cannot know, but equips us abundantly with what we must know: his signs, his limitations, and the simple, consistent practices of faith and remembrance that will keep a believer grounded. The Dajjal’s fitnah is the greatest trial this ummah will ever face — but Allah, in His infinite mercy, has already given us everything we need to navigate it.
