Surah Al-Fatihah, known as “The Opening,” is the greatest chapter of the Quran and the most frequently recited passage in the life of every Muslim. It is recited in every unit of every prayer, making it the spiritual cornerstone of the daily connection between a servant and their Creator.
The Seven Oft-Repeated Verses
Allah Himself refers to Al-Fatihah as “the seven oft-repeated verses” (Quran 15:87). In just seven lines, it encompasses praise of Allah, acknowledgment of His mercy and sovereignty, a declaration of exclusive worship, and the most essential supplication a human being can make — the plea for guidance to the straight path.
“Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Master of the Day of Judgment. You alone do we worship, and You alone do we ask for help. Guide us to the straight path.”
A Conversation Between Servant and Creator
In an authentic hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) narrated that Allah said: “I have divided the prayer between Myself and My servant into two halves.” When the servant says “Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds,” Allah responds: “My servant has praised Me.” This beautiful exchange happens every single time a Muslim recites Al-Fatihah in prayer.
- Al-Fatihah is recited at least 17 times daily in the five obligatory prayers
- The Prophet called it the greatest surah in the Quran
- It is a direct conversation between the worshiper and Allah
- No prayer is valid without the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah
“The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked Your anger, nor of those who have gone astray. Ameen.”
