This opening lecture of the Seerah series establishes why every Muslim must study the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — the single greatest human being to ever walk the earth. Allah Himself commanded us in the Quran: “Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example” (33:21). No matter which angle you examine his life — worship, leadership, family, mercy, or moral character — you will find unmatched guidance and benefit.
The Names Allah Gave His Prophet
The Prophet (peace be upon him) was given over 250 names by scholars throughout history, but the most significant are those bestowed by Allah Himself. He is Muhammad (the praised one) and Ahmad (the most praising) — the only two proper nouns the Quran uses for him. He is Al-Mahi, through whom Allah erases disbelief; Al-Hashir, after whom people will be resurrected; and Al-Aqib, the final prophet after whom there is no other.
“Allah has commanded us to know this man. This is an obligation that Allah has put upon us — we have to know this person.”
Why the Seerah Matters
- Over 50 verses in the Quran command us to take the Prophet as our example in all aspects of life
- Allah sent human prophets — not angels — so we would have a relatable, living example to follow
- The word “Seerah” itself means to traverse or journey — studying his life means walking in his footsteps
- Understanding pre-Islamic Arabia sets the stage for appreciating the miraculous transformation Islam brought
“No matter which angle you look at the life and times of the Prophet, you will benefit — in religion, manners, leadership, and how to be a better father, husband, and human being.”
