The Quran contains statements about the natural world that were made over 1,400 years ago, long before modern science had the tools to verify them. This episode examines three remarkable examples: the embryological stages in the womb, the geographical identification of the lowest place on earth, and a fulfilled prophecy about the Roman Empire that seemed impossible at the time it was revealed.
Three Stages of Development in the Womb
The Quran states that God “creates you stage by stage in your mother’s wombs in a threefold darkness.” Modern embryology confirms that a baby’s development takes place in three distinct stages: pre-embryonic (first two and a half weeks), embryonic (until the end of the eighth week), and fetal (from the eighth week to labor). This precise classification is taught in medical schools today, yet the Quran described it at a time when people had almost no knowledge of embryological development.
“The fact that such detailed and accurate information was given in the Quran at a time when people had scarce information on medical matters is clear evidence that the Quran is not the word of man, but the word of God.”
The Prophecy of Rome’s Victory
- Around 620 CE, the Quran declared that the defeated Roman (Byzantine) Empire would be victorious again “in a few years”
- At that time, Byzantium had lost Jerusalem, Syria, Palestine, Egypt, and Armenia to the Persians and was on the verge of total collapse
- Emperor Heraclius was melting church gold to fund his army, and governors were revolting against him
- Yet in December 627 CE, roughly seven years after the revelation, Byzantium decisively defeated the Persians at Nineveh, exactly as the Quran foretold
The Lowest Place on Earth
The Quran describes the location of Rome’s defeat using the Arabic word “adna,” derived from “deni” (meaning low) and “ard” (meaning world/earth). The critical battles took place near the Dead Sea basin, which at 395 meters below sea level is confirmed by modern measurement to be the lowest point on the earth’s surface. This geographical fact was impossible to determine without modern instruments, yet the Quran identified it accurately over 14 centuries ago.
“The Dead Sea, lying at 395 meters below sea level, is the lowest region on Earth. The altitude of the Dead Sea could only be measured with modern measurement techniques. Yet this region was stated to be the lowest point on earth in the Quran.”
What This Evidence Means
- These are not vague or metaphorical claims but specific, verifiable statements about the physical world
- No human being in 7th century Arabia could have known these facts through observation or available technology
- The Quran invites every reader to examine its claims and bring evidence against them if they can
- The convergence of scientific accuracy, fulfilled prophecy, and historical detail points to a divine origin
