When a truck driver deliberately mowed down three generations of the Afzaal family on a quiet Sunday in London, Ontario, the world witnessed yet another act of terrorism rooted in Islamophobia. Four innocent lives were stolen and a nine-year-old child was left fighting for survival in hospital. This was not a random act of violence — it was a premeditated, hate-fueled terrorist attack against Muslims on Canadian soil, and it exposed a glaring double standard in how the media, politicians, and society at large respond to terrorism depending on the faith of the perpetrator.
The Double Standard in Media Coverage of Terrorism
When the perpetrator of a terrorist attack has a Muslim-sounding name, the entire machinery of media scrutiny kicks into overdrive. Every verse of the Quran is dissected, every Islamic speaker the person ever watched is investigated, every friend and family member is put on display, and the entire faith of Islam is put on trial. Yet when the attacker is identified as a devout Christian — as Nathaniel Veltman was described by his own close friends — the language softens dramatically. He becomes a “quiet, friendly, homeschooled Christian kid.” His associates are not raided. His church is not investigated. His priests are not questioned. The case is quietly closed around a single individual labeled a “lone wolf.”
We don’t blame Christianity for the actions of some Christians who might do some evil action — just like in this case. In the same way, you shouldn’t go ahead and try to blame Islam for the action of some lunatic who does something totally against Islam.
A Pattern of Islamophobic Attacks — Not Isolated Incidents
- January 2017: The Quebec City mosque massacre — a gunman killed six worshippers and injured 19 others during prayer
- September 2020: A mosque caretaker was brutally murdered in a knife attack in an Edmonton mosque parking lot
- March 2021: Black Muslim women were attacked in the streets of Edmonton, Alberta
- June 2021: The Afzaal family was deliberately targeted and killed by a truck in London, Ontario
- Over 300 documented Islamophobic attacks occurred in Canada between 2015 and 2019, with more than 250 far-right extremist organizations operating on Canadian soil
Islam Teaches Justice, Not Collective Blame
As one viewer commented during the episode: “Christianity has nothing to do with individual behaviors — media and political lobbies are the ones to blame.” This is exactly the point. Muslims demonstrate honesty and sincerity by refusing to blame an entire faith for the crimes of individuals. We blame the language of hate, the racism, and the irresponsible rhetoric of opportunistic politicians and media figures.
The Real Solution: Education, Dawah, and Truth
The path forward demands action on two fronts. First, governments must hold accountable not just the individual terrorists but the networks, propagandists, and hate-spewing media commentators who radicalize them — Islamophobia is not merely discrimination, it is terrorism, and Islamophobia kills. Second, Muslims must rise to the Quranic command to convey the message of Islam through dawah, open mosque days, and genuine community engagement. After the Christchurch attack in New Zealand, mosques opened their doors and hundreds of New Zealanders embraced Islam as a result. When people encounter the truth of Islam firsthand — its teachings of justice, mercy, and faith — the walls of ignorance and hatred crumble. The double standard will only end when truth replaces propaganda, and that mission begins with every single one of us sharing the message of Islam with our neighbors, colleagues, and friends.
