Can a religion actually be proven true? Abdur-Raheem Green tackles this bold question head-on, arguing that Islam does not ask for blind faith but instead invites critical examination and demands evidence. This introductory lecture lays the foundation for a comprehensive series presenting the many proofs that Islam is indeed the truth revealed by the Creator of the heavens and the earth.
What Does “Proof” Really Mean?
The Quran itself repeatedly commands: “Bring your proof if you are truthful.” This is not a religion that shies away from scrutiny. In everyday life, we demand credentials from a utility worker before letting them into our homes and require evidence before any court accepts a property claim. If we apply such standards to worldly matters, how much more important is it to demand proof when it comes to the purpose of our entire existence and our eternal destiny?
“The Quran tells us: ‘Say, bring your proof if you are truthful.’ The person who is making a claim has to prove it. This is something Allah mentions many, many times in the Quran.”
Faith and Evidence Are Not Opposites
- Islam does not define faith as believing without proof; rather, it encourages using intellect and evidence to arrive at conviction
- Whatever you believe, practice, or follow as a Muslim should be based upon evidence from the Quran and the authentic Sunnah
- The issues religion addresses, such as the purpose of life and the Hereafter, are far more consequential than any worldly matter
The Evidence Islam Presents
This series covers multiple independent categories of proof that, taken together, form an overwhelming case for the truth of Islam. These include the linguistic miracle of the Quran, scientific statements made over 1,400 years ago that modern science has only recently confirmed, accurate prophecies of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and the testimony of Jewish and Christian scholars who recognized him in their own scriptures.
“If we looked at any single one of these items on its own, it would be really unique and amazing. But when we begin to combine them and gather them all together, we can see that we have so many evidences from so many different angles.”
Why This Matters for Everyone
- Islam’s claim is not based on guesswork, cultural tradition, or personal opinion
- The Quran’s preservation, its scientific accuracy, its fulfilled prophecies, and the witnessing of People of the Book all serve as independent lines of evidence
- Every rational, thinking person owes it to themselves to examine these proofs before making a judgment about the most important question in life
